National Air and Space Museum Catalogs.
2016
\"Experience the thrill of flying some of the world's most important airplanes and spacecraft. Best of the National Air and Space Museum provides unprecedented access to the most popular museum in the world. The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum hosts an average of seven million visits every year, and the Udvar-Hazy Center--three football fields long and ten stories high--is a phenomenon in its own right: in the first week it was opened, some 250,000 people came through the doors. It now receives more than one million visits annually. Best of the National Air and Space Museum features the best of both museums, from the Challenger space shuttle and the Wright flyer to the Spirit of St. Louis and the stealth bomber. Bob Van der Linden, curator of aeronautics, has selected the most historically important, popular, and just plain impressive aircraft and spacecraft from the collections of both museums to be captured in the book's beautiful full color layouts. Each layout includes intriguing facts of the item's design, use, mission, specifications, and dimensions. It's like your own guided tour!\"--Wheelers.co.nz.
Survey on the Impact of Historical Museum Exhibition Forms on Visitors’ Perceptions Based on Eye-Tracking
2024
Exhibition design in museum space is of great significance in enhancing cultural attraction, visitor experience, and heritage conservation. With the growth of spiritual and cultural needs, the construction of museums has increased, but the quality of exhibitions has been improved to a limited extent. In order to explore visitors’ perceptual experience in terms of display forms, this paper combines eye-tracking technology and subjective evaluation to select three display forms, namely, stand-alone display form, combined picture and object form, and combined 3D object and physical form, for the research. Combining field research, eye-tracking experiments, and subjective questionnaire evaluations, this study explores the relationship between visual perception and emotional experience in different display formats. The results showed that (1) the effects of different display formats differed between visual perception and emotional experience, and (2) there is some correlation between visual perception and emotional experience. Specifically, the number of fixations sessions was negatively correlated with fun, richness, comfort, and attractiveness and positively correlated with authenticity, while the average fixation time was positively correlated with the former and negatively correlated with authenticity. Combining the two dimensions, the study concluded that visitors’ experience satisfaction and preference are high in response to the form combining 3D objects and physical objects; the exhibition form of combining pictures and physical objects produces a higher degree of cognition in a short period of time; and the stand-alone display form has the lowest degree of preference, with poor information retention among visitors. It is hoped that this study will provide some reference for the use of exhibition forms in historical museums.

Visitors’ Interactions with the Exhibits and Behaviors in Museum Spaces: Insights from the National Museum of Bahrain
2025
Museums play a vital role in preserving heritage and facilitating learning through exhibits. However, fostering meaningful visitor engagement remains a challenge. This study aims to analyze visitor interactions and behaviors at the National Museum of Bahrain to understand how exhibit design influences engagement. The research objectives include identifying spatial and exhibit-related factors affecting visitor interaction and proposing strategies to enhance engagement. A case study approach was employed, utilizing an online survey, visitor tracking, interviews, and spatial observations as they provide comprehensive insights into visitor behavior, spatial engagement, and exhibit effectiveness. Tracking recorded movement patterns, time spent at exhibits, and engagement levels, identifying areas of high and low interaction. Observations analyzed spatial configurations, while interviews provided insights into visitor experiences and preferences. Findings indicate that exhibit layout, accessibility, and content relevance significantly influence engagement, with certain exhibits attracting more interaction due to strategic positioning. The study identifies key design elements that enhance visitor exploration and proposes recommendations for optimizing exhibit arrangements to create immersive and educational experiences. These insights help museum authorities identify spatial and exhibit-related shortcomings. The study offers recommendations to curators to refine the designs of the exhibits and the layouts, promoting more meaningful connections with the exhibits and thereby improving the experiences of the visitors to demonstrate the importance of visitor-focused designs in museums.

The nation's hangar : aircraft treasures of the Smithsonian from the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
\"The Nation's Hangar: Aircraft Treasures of the Smithsonian offers a fascinating textual and visual history of civilian, military, and commercial aviation from the earliest balloon flights to today's most advanced aircraft. The Nation's Hangar charts the awe-inspiring history of flight around the world. F. Robert Van Der Linden, a Smithsonian curator and leading expert on aviation history, explains the fascinating stories behind aviation's great technological advances and provides historic and social context that highlights the many ways in which these innovations have changed the course of human history. The Nation's Hangar is also a visual delight. The Smithsonian aircraft collection has never looked so compelling and sleek. The Nation's Hangar is a must-have for that fly boy or fly girl in your flight pattern\"-- Provided by publisher.
Audio described comics in the museum
2024
Audio Description is typically used to describe the visual aspects of various cultural products in the creative industries: performed plays, films, sports matches, art gallery and museum items. Such descriptions offer alternative sensory input for blind or partially sighted audiences and have been the staple of research in Audiovisual Translation Studies. There are, however, rather few studies focusing on museum environments and none that examine the niche area of comic art. This article addresses such a gap in two ways. First, it explores comics from an audiovisual translation/accessibility perspective. Second, it reports findings from a pilot study of accessible comic art where the views of selected professionals (curator, comic artists, audio describer) were collected, descriptions for three comics were commissioned and the responses of blind visitors to a comic art museum were gauged. The audio described comics—not without their limitations, as will be shown—are the result of a contingent collaboration of actors in the space of the museum.

Tourism demonstration system for large-scale museums based on 3D virtual simulation technology
2020
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to enhance audience experience in museum by using three-dimensional (3D) virtual simulation technology.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, a large space museum building tourism demonstration system based on 3D virtual simulation technology was proposed. Starting from the concept of virtual reality (VR), the characteristics of VR and the classification of VR systems were introduced, and the research status of VR technology at home and abroad and the application of 3D virtual simulation were discussed. Then the key technologies of 3D modeling, 3D scene optimization and 3D simulation driving of 3D virtual simulation were expounded, and the characteristics and application scope of different technical methods were analyzed. Finally, an example of the Hongzhou Kiln 3D network museum was listed.
Findings
The research results showed that 3D virtual simulation has a wide range of applications in the field of VR. Different elements need to be considered for different types of applications, and different contents need to be integrated to achieve the corresponding interaction modes.
