Unclay
\"First published in 1931, the spellbinding novel Unclay glows with an unworldly light. Death has come to the small village of Dodder to deliver a parchment with the names of two local mortals and the fatal word unclay upon it. When he loses the precious sheet, he is at a loss, and also free of his errand. Hungry to taste the sweet fruits of human life, Mr. John Death, as he is now known, takes a holiday in Dorsetshire and rests from his reaping. The startlingly alive natural world basks in summer loveliness, but the village teems with the old sins (lust, avarice, greed)--as well as some loving-kindness. What unfolds is a witty, earthy, metaphysical, and delicious novel of astonishing beauty and moral force\"-- Provided by publisher.

2007,2009
What is Christian wisdom for living in the twenty-first century? Where is it to be found? How can it be learnt? In the midst of diverse religions and worldviews and the demands and complexities of our world, David Ford explores a Christian way of uniting love of wisdom with wisdom in love. Core elements are the 'discernment of cries', the love of God for God's sake, interpretation of scripture, and the shaping of desire in faith. Case studies deal with inter-faith wisdom among Jews, Christians and Muslims, universities as centres of wisdom as well as knowledge and know-how and the challenge of learning disabilities. Throughout, there is an attempt to do justice to the premodern, modern and postmodern while grappling with scripture, tradition and the cries of the world today. Ford opens up the rich resources of Christianity in engaging with the issues and urgencies of contemporary life.

The role of linguistic perspectives in the language description
2024
The paper discusses the language of linguistic description (metalanguage), in particular the question of how the language of description can influence the language that is the object of the description. I approach the topic from the aspect of the use of linguistic terms and their personification. I summarize the results of my three previous case studies, in which I tracked the formulations associated with the selected terms. I focused on the actions that, according to the literal understanding of the formulations, are performed by the terms. Based on these case studies, I concluded that the more frequently a term is used, the more likely it is that it will “perform” an activity and, if this happens, the further away they go, the more their “competencies” expand, i.e. they perform progressively more complex acts. I have characterized this phenomenon as the perspective through which we view linguistic reality through terms (the perspective of the term), and in contrast to it, I have presented the speaker’s perspective, through which linguistic reality is perceived from the perspective of everyday speakers. I have pointed out that the perspective of the term can affect the description of language in a way that shifts the linguist’s attention from the real behaviour of speakers to the “behaviour” of abstract linguistic entities.
