Two generals from the northwestern state of Sonora, Álvaro Obregón and Plutarco Elías Calles, dominated Mexico between 1920 and 1934, having risen to prominence in the course of the Mexican Revolution. Torn between popular demands for ending the privileges of wealthy foreign investors and opposition by a hawkish U.S. administration and enemies at home, the two generals and their allies from their home state mixed radical rhetoric with the accommodation of entrenched interests. In The Sonoran Dynasty in Mexico Jürgen Buchenau tells the story of this ruling group, which rejected the Indigenous and Catholic past during the decades of the revolution and aimed to reinvent Mexico along the lines of the modern and secular societies in western Europe and the United States. In addition to Obregón and Calles, the Sonoran Dynasty included Adolfo de la Huerta and Abelardo L. Rodríguez, four Sonorans among six presidents in less than two decades. Although the group began with the common aims of nationalism, modernization, central political control, and enrichment, Buchenau argues that this group progressively fell apart in a series of bloody conflicts that reflected broader economic, political, and social disagreements. By analyzing the dynasty from its origins through its eventual downfall, Buchenau presents an innovative look at the negotiation of power and state formation in revolutionary Mexico.

Several 16th century scholars wrote in their copies of the Moralia's first edition, known as \"Aldine\", a number of annotations that corrected, completed and reinterpreted its text. Despite their value, modern editions not always include them, and when they do, they often make mistakes. This is due, no doubt, to the lack of a thorough study that evaluates these annotations and determines their mutual relations. This paper aims to bridge that gap: dealing with the text of De facie in orbe lunae, it offers an up-to-date catalogue of the preserved Aldines with annotations that establishes both the value of their correction remarks and that of their interrelations.

A partir de un abordaje retórico-literario, nuestro objetivo es indagar las representaciones discursivas de los elementos supersticiosos en la biografía de Nicias y en la de Dión. Tomaremos como ejemplo el eclipse de luna narrado en Nicias 23 y reiterado en Dión 24, para demostrar que mediante la repetición del ejemplo en dos contextos distintos Plutarco nos invita a reflexionar sobre la superstición de un modo más atractivo que la mera exposición teórica de doctrinas filosóficas.

La importancia de estar relacionado con Alejandro fue una pieza fundamental después de su muerte, y se manifestó cuando se le presenta en sueños a sus sucesores (el motivo del 'sueño de Alejandro'). Plutarco introduce este motivo en sus Vidas en tres ocasiones (Eum. 6.5, Pyrrh. 11.2, Demetr. 29.1), todas ellas dentro de un contexto muy similar. Aunque la aparición de Alejandro en sueños en las Vidas podría considerarse como una invención plutarquea (y en dos sueños lo es), Plutarco busca usarlos como recurso para cumplir su objetivo: ejemplificar el carácter del protagonista de su Vida.

[...]planets and luminaries are embodied in an episode that creates a wondrous poetic vision of a changing cosmos and the resulting human anxieties.5 CELESTIAL AND INFERNAL MILLS As we begin a reading of the episode we are confronted with the \"discovery\" of windmills. R. Mendizábal explains: \"Sabido es que en las siete estrellas más visibles de la Osa Menor veía la imaginación de nuestros abuelos una bocina: su embocadura, que es la estrella polar, por estar junto al polo, aparece inmovible; las dos estrellas opuestas forman la boca de la bocina, y describen diariamente alrededor de la Polar [...] un círculo\" (182-83). [...]the stars point to a cosmic mill, to the turning of the mill as the turning of the heavens.

In this article the figures of the orators Phocion, Demosthenes and Demades are analysed through the biographies that Plutarch devoted to the first two personages. We try to prove that we can only approach Plutarch's ideas on their oratory if we take his selection of the data from other authors and we contrast them with the biographer's opinion. In addition, we have compared these data with what is encompassed in other historical and literary sources. From this detailed and complex analysis done at different levels we can extract very useful information. This will allow us to study the oratory in the biographies of Plutarch, wich might sometimes be blurred or misinterpreted when it is focused on just one personage. It is clear that Plutarch gives more importance to the personages' conduct and character and relies on that to judge their oratory. Thus he departs himself from the assessments that he finds in his sources.

El presente estudio pretende, a partir de un análisis preliminar del tratamiento de la juventud en las Vidas Paralelas, ofrecer una primera aproximación a la juventud en Plutarco como objeto de estudio de pleno derecho. Para ello, tras destacar la importancia de este tipo de análisis, y tras exponer algunos de los postulados básicos que guiarán el presente trabajo, se analizarán, de manera breve, los principales referentes historiográficos para el estudio de las primeras franjas etarias de la vida en la antigüedad grecorromana. A continuación, realizaremos un acercamiento a la juventud a través de la lente de los autores antiguos, el cual destacará las ambigüedades y ambivalencias atribuidas a este grupo de edad, situado a medio camino entre la irracionalidad intrínseca de la infancia y la sensatez que se presupone en las personas adultas. Finalmente, y a través sobre todo de una serie de casos seleccionados por su especial importancia dentro de la enorme colección de anécdotas de las Vidas Paralelas, se intentará insertar la imagen de la juventud ofrecida por Plutarco en su obra biográfica dentro de esa panorámica general, para concluir que, especificidades aparte, el modo de pensar de nuestro autor coincide, en rasgos generales, con el de la mayor parte de los escritores de su tiempo (2).
