Qualitative Content Analysis: Conceptualizations and Challenges in Research Practice—Introduction to the FQS Special Issue \Qualitative Content Analysis I\
In diesem Beitrag führen wir in den ersten Teil der Schwerpunktausgabe zur qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse (QIA) ein. In einem ersten Schritt beschreiben wir die Überlegungen, die dem Schwerpunkt zugrunde liegen, und erläutern die Unterteilung in zwei Teilausgaben. Anschließend geben wir einen Überblick über zentrale Fragestellungen in der gegenwärtigen Methodenliteratur zur QIA und identifizieren vier Kernbereiche: 1. die Konzeptualisierung der QIA als hybride Kombination quantitativer und qualitativer Elemente oder als genuin qualitative Methode; 2. die Relation zwischen dem deutschsprachigen und dem internationalen Methodendiskurs; 3. die Frage, ob sich theoretische und/oder epistemologische Grundlagen der QIA identifizieren lassen; 4. fehlende Transparenz bei der Dokumentation von Anwendungen der Methode. In einem nächsten Schritt gehen wir auf den Prozess der Erstellung der Schwerpunktausgabe ein und erläutern die Struktur und die Zusammenhänge zwischen den Beiträgen. In dem vorliegenden ersten Teil legen wir den Fokus auf Artikel zur Konzeptualisierung der QIA sowie auf Beiträge, in denen Herausforderungen bei der Methodenanwendung und Lösungsansätze beschrieben werden. Auf dieser Grundlage kommen wir zu dem Schluss, dass sich in der gegenwärtigen Methodenliteratur durchaus unterschiedliche Konzeptionen der QIA identifizieren lassen. Dies spiegelt sich auch in der Vielfalt der Herausforderungen bei der Anwendung der Methode wider und in den unterschiedlichen kreativen Umgangsweisen mit diesen Herausforderungen, wie sie von den Autor_innen dieser ersten Teilausgabe beschrieben werden.
Qualitative Content Analysis: Why is it Still a Path Less Taken?
Die Geschichte der Inhaltsanalyse ist größtenteils die Geschichte ihrer quantitativen Variante. Obwohl die qualitative Inhaltsanalyse (QIA) in wissenschaftlichen Schriften behandelt wurde, blieb sie weitgehend auf eine explorative, impressionistische und weniger pragmatische Rolle beschränkt. Der in den 1940er Jahren verbreitete logische Positivismus und die Dominanz quantitativer Analyseformen prägten die Methode insbesondere in angelsächsischen Regionen in einem quantitativen Sinne. Diese und andere Trends überschatteten die methodologischen Entwicklungen innerhalb der QIA, obwohl kritische Stimmen Einwände gegen die übermäßige Fokussierung auf Quantifizierung und die Analyse des manifesten Inhalts auf Kosten der tieferen Bedeutungen im Text erhoben. Im Beitrag wird ein kurzer Rückblick auf die Geschichte und die Bedeutung der QIA gegeben, um anschließend auf die Hauptgründe ihrer Marginalisierung im angelsächsischen im Vergleich zum kontinentalen Kontext einzugehen. Während die stärkere Präsenz der qualitativen Forschung einschließlich der QIA in Deutschland und anderen nicht englischsprachigen Ländern durch die Dominanz der hermeneutischen intellektuellen Traditionen erklärt werden kann, ist ihre generelle Bedeutungslosigkeit im angelsächsischen Raum mit methodologischer Unklarheit, der positivistischen quantitativen Orthodoxie bei der Bewertung qualitativer Methoden und der erkenntnistheoretischen und ontologischen Ambiguität des Ansatzes verbunden. Basierend auf der Diskussion werden einige Überlegungen zu den zukünftigen Entwicklungen der QIA angestellt.
The impact of online reputation on hotel profitability
Purpose The purpose of this study is to quantify the impact of online customer reputation on financial profitability. Design/methodology/approach Online reputation is captured by extracting the most recurring textual themes associated with customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction, expressed within positive vs negative online guest reviews on Booking.com. Latent semantic analysis is used for textual analysis. Proxies of overall financial performance are manually constructed for the sample hotels, using financial data from the Financial Analysis Made Easy (FAME) database. Ordinary least squares is used to gauge the effect of online customer reputation on financial profitability. Findings Empirical findings indicate that recurring textual themes from positive online reviews (in contrast to negative reviews) exhibit a higher degree of homogeneity and consensus. The themes repeated in positive, but not in negative reviews, are found to significantly associate with hotel financial performance. Results contribute to the discussion about the measurable effect of online reputation on financial performance. Originality/value Contemporary quantitative methods are used to extract online reputation for a sample of UK hotels and associate this reputation with bottom-line financial profitability. The relationship between online reputation, as manifested within hotel guest reviews, and the financial performance of hotels is examined. Financial profitability is the result of revenues, reduced by the costs incurred in order to be able to offer a given level of service. Previous studies have mainly focused on basic measures of performance, i.e. revenue generation, rather than bottom-line profitability. By combining online guest reviews from travel websites (Booking.com) with financial measures of enterprise performance (FAME), this study makes a meaningful contribution to the strategic management of hotel businesses.
Comparing verbal and visual rhetoric – and the danger of “empirical shorthands”
This paper will evaluate the quantitative content analysis of visual rhetoric which has been put forward by George Rossolatos in the context of audio-visuality and marketing research. Rossolatos bases his taxonomy of visual rhetorical figures on Groupe µ’s adaptation of classical rhetoric in (1970). With the aim of creating a systematic model for marketing analysis, he and his collaborators have coded and classified an extensive number of audiovisual commercials from the top international strata of economically valuable brands. For comparison, I have during a period of four years given undergraduates the task of collecting and categorizing a minimum of ten audio-visual commercials, each of which should exemplify one of the figures referred to by Rossolatos. The outcomes of the task indicate that a random explorative study with a minimum of operationalization and training of coders is enough for obtaining results akin to those reported by Rossolatos. This may be regarded as a positive outcome from a pedagogical point of view, but it may also raise the suspicion that Rossolatos’s criteria are merely intuitive. If the incidence of visual rhetorical figures is to be studied as an independent content variable of audio-visual enunciations, the values/figures should be described with greater caution.
A Big-Data Approach to Understanding the Thematic Landscape of the Field of Business Ethics, 1982-2016
This study focuses on examining the thematic landscape of the history of scholarly publication in business ethics. We analyze the titles, abstracts, full texts, and citation information of all research papers published in the field's leading journal, the Journal of Business Ethics, from its inaugural issue in February 1982 until December 2016—a dataset that comprises 6308 articles and 42 million words. Our key method is a computational algorithm known as probabilistic topic modeling, which we use to examine objectively the field's latent thematic landscape based on the vast volume of scholarly texts. This \"big-data\" approach allows us not only to provide time-specific snapshots of various research topics, but also to track the dynamic evolution of each topic over time. We further examine the pattern of individual papers' topic diversity and the influence of individual papers' topic diversity on their impact over time. We conclude this study with our recommendation for future studies in business ethics research.
Exploring a Community of Inquiry Supported by a Social Media-Based Learning Environment
The Community of Inquiry (Col) framework has been widely used in blended and online educational research, more recently being applied also to social media settings. This paper explores the learning community created in such a social media-based educational environment, using an extended version of Col, which includes four components: cognitive presence, social presence, teaching presence and learning presence. The context of study is a project-based learning scenario implemented in an undergraduate Computer Science course. A quantitative content analysis method is employed, to examine a total of 1712 online contributions (blog posts and tweets), generated by 75 students. Results show that the social media tools provide complementary support to the community of inquiry: the blog is primarily a content space (as cognitive presence is dominant), while Twitter is mostly a discussion space (as social and learning presences are dominant). Teaching presence is barely exhibited by the students, being mainly the preserve of the instructor, while learning presence is quite strong, reflecting students' significant self- and co-regulation behavior.
How do patients and families evaluate attitude of psychiatrists in Japan?: quantitative content analysis of open-ended items of patient responses from a large-scale questionnaire survey
Background Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) has been widely advocated in psychiatric fields. In Japan, however, PPI has not been implemented in clinical practice. In order to improve quality of psychiatric service in Japan, it is essential to understand psychiatrists’ attitudes from the patients’ perspective as a first step in practicing PPI. This study aimed to investigate the patients’ evaluation of psychiatrists’ attitudes by illustrating themes appeared in the questionnaire survey. Methods This study used the data obtained from the questionnaire survey responded by 2,683 patients with family members who belong to the family associations for psychiatric patients in Japan. Three open-ended question items in this survey, \"criteria for selecting a psychiatrist (784 patient responses, response rate 29.2%),” “attitude of the psychiatrist in charge (929 patient responses, response rate 34.6%),\" and \"communication skills of the psychiatrist in charge (739 patient responses, response rate 27.5%)\" were analyzed by co-occurrence network using KH Coder software. Results The common theme observed in all three items was whether psychiatrist took sufficient consultation time. The criteria for selecting a psychiatrist were summarized whether psychiatrist provided appropriate advices for patients’ problems, whether psychiatrist cared about patients’ demands and whether psychiatrist informed to patients about diseases and medications. The attitudes of the psychiatrists in charge that patients had most wanted their psychiatrists to improve were: psychiatrists only watch the computer, make diagnosis according to the patients’ individual condition, and try to build a relationship of trust with the patient. The patients’ demands regarding communication skills of the psychiatrist in charge included: whether the psychiatrist communicated in a way that improves the patient's psychological state, whether the psychiatrist was attentive to the patients’ family, and whether the psychiatrist could control his/her own mood during the consultation. Conclusion The results reflected the patients’ demands that do not appear in closed-ended items. It was suggested that patients’open-ended responses to questionnaires and their involvement in the psychiatric research (PPI) may provide more insight into improving pshchiaric care in Japan.
Differences in the purpose of exercise between hemodialysis patients who continued or dropped out of exercise programs: a multicenter cohort study
Background Selecting suitable exercise goals is crucial for fostering adherence to, and maintenance of, exercise therapy. We aimed to evaluate the variance in exercise objectives between individuals who continued and those who dropped out of a 6-month intradialytic exercise program by analyzing an open-ended questionnaire administered to patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods The study consisted of outpatients ( n  = 541; mean age, 70 years) undergoing maintenance hemodialysis, who had been informed of an intradialytic exercise program and voluntarily agreed to participate. The primary outcome was the exercise purpose. The difference in exercise purpose was quantitatively analyzed between the exercise continuation and dropout groups. A co-occurrence network was created and concepts were constructed. The basic attributes were compared using chi-squared and independent t-tests. Results Over 6 months, 154 patients (28.5%) dropped out of the intradialytic exercise program. Concepts related to the goals of the program were: (1) physical function and condition, (2) addressing limitations, (3) maintaining daily life activities, and (4) physical condition recognition. Co-occurrence network analysis showed that the exercise continuation group established their objectives based on the health benefits of exercise, and proactively set goals rooted in comprehending their current issues and problems. The dropout group tended to perceive treatment passively as an extension of daily clinical practice, rather than actively formulating exercise objectives. Conclusion The exercise objectives of those who continued the exercise program differed from those who dropped out. Patients in the exercise continuation group set more affirmative and specific exercise objectives, whereas those in the dropout group set more passive and abstract exercise objectives. Trust research in public relations: an assessment of its conceptual, theoretical and methodological foundations
PurposeDuring the past few years, public trust in organisations, institutions and systems has decreased. Trust is an important antecedent not only for relationship-building but also for image and reputation management. This study aims to systematically review scientific publications on public relations and trust to explore the current status of trust research, including its conceptual definition, measurement and theorisation.Design/methodology/approachOnly English-language scientific papers published in key public relations journals were analysed. Titles, abstracts and keywords were searched with the terms “public relations” and/or “strategic communication” and/or “communication management” and “trust”, returning 254 discrete articles. Quantitative content analysis and thematic analysis were used to extract information.FindingsTrust research has limited methodological and intellectual diversity. Most studies have been published by North American scholars using surveys and interviews as the primary methods, and most are positioned within the public relations literature. One-third of papers do not use any specific theory to define trust, and about 13% of those in which trust is a central element do not refer to any conceptual foundation. The majority of papers are centred on professional and managerial problems, with limited discussion of publics/stakeholders' or societal problems.Originality/valueThis study offers important information about the development of trust research in public relations and sheds light on current knowledge gaps that can inform future research.
Natural Disaster Emergency Management in China Based on Quantitative Content Analysis of Central Government Policy Tools
The sudden and unusual nature of natural disasters in China underscores the complexity and difficulty inherent in China’s natural disaster emergency management (NDEM). National-level NDEM plays a critical role in bridging China’s emergency management capacity with modernization efforts, serving as a foundation for integrating development with security. In this study, we analyzed 250 NDEM-related policies issued by the Chinese central government between 1954 and 2022 as research objects. Using a five-factor analysis framework, we tracked the evolution of China’s NDEM by analyzing the time of issue, policy authority, departmental cooperation, policy themes, and policy tools. Our findings indicated that the cooperation networks exhibited growing complexity and expanding collaboration in the early stages but shifted to a more centralized and streamlined structure after the year 2018. The themes of NDEM policies reflect the modernization needs of emergency management, with science and technology proving essential to advancing NDEM capabilities. However, the structure of NDEM policy tools requires further optimization. Accordingly, we propose policy recommendations aimed at enhancing interdepartmental cooperation, accelerating the integration of science and technology in NDEM, and optimizing and adjusting the configuration of policy tools.
