It is anticipated that many of the future forest mapping applications will be based on three-dimensional (3D) point clouds. A comparison study was conducted to verify the explanatory power and information contents of several 3D remote sensing data sources on the retrieval of above ground biomass (AGB), stem volume (VOL), basal area (G), basal-area weighted mean diameter (Dg) and Lorey’s mean height (Hg) at the plot level, utilizing the following data: synthetic aperture radar (SAR) Interferometry, SAR radargrammetry, satellite-imagery having stereo viewing capability, airborne laser scanning (ALS) with various densities (0.8–6 pulses/m2) and aerial stereo imagery. Laser scanning is generally known as the primary source providing a 3D point cloud. However, photogrammetric, radargrammetric and interferometric techniques can be used to produce 3D point clouds from space- and air-borne stereo images. Such an image-based point cloud could be utilized in a similar manner as ALS providing that accurate digital terrain model is available. In this study, the performance of these data sources for providing point cloud data was evaluated with 91 sample plots that were established in Evo, southern Finland within a boreal forest zone and surveyed in 2014 for this comparison. The prediction models were built using random forests technique with features derived from each data sources as independent variables and field measurements of forest attributes as response variable. The relative root mean square errors (RMSEs) varied in the ranges of 4.6% (0.97 m)–13.4% (2.83 m) for Hg, 11.7% (3.0 cm)–20.6% (5.3 cm) for Dg, 14.8% (4.0 m2/ha)–25.8% (6.9 m2/ha) for G, 15.9% (43.0 m3/ha)–31.2% (84.2 m3/ha) for VOL and 14.3% (19.2 Mg/ha)–27.5% (37.0 Mg/ha) for AGB, respectively, depending on the data used. Results indicate that ALS data achieved the most accurate estimates for all forest inventory attributes. For image-based 3D data, high-altitude aerial images and WorldView-2 satellite optical image gave similar results for Hg and Dg, which were only slightly worse than those of ALS data. As expected, spaceborne SAR data produced the worst estimates. WorldView-2 satellite data performed well, achieving accuracy comparable to the one with ALS data for G, VOL and AGB estimation. SAR interferometry data seems to contain more information for forest inventory than SAR radargrammetry and reach a better accuracy (relative RMSE decreased from 13.4% to 9.5% for Hg, 20.6% to 19.2% for Dg, 25.8% to 20.9% for G, 31.2% to 22.0% for VOL and 27.5% to 20.7% for AGB, respectively). However, the availability of interferometry data is limited. The results confirmed the high potential of all 3D remote sensing data sources for forest inventory purposes. However, the assumption of using other than ALS data is that there exist a high quality digital terrain model, in our case it was derived from ALS.

A Probabilistic Approach for Stereo 3D Point Cloud Reconstruction from Airborne Single-Channel Multi-Aspect SAR Image Sequences

We investigate the problem of obtaining dense 3D reconstruction from airborne multi-aspect synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image sequences. Dense 3D reconstructions of multi-view SAR images are vulnerable to anisotropic scatters. To address this issue, we propose a probabilistic 3D reconstruction method based on jointly estimating the pixel’s height and degree of anisotropy. Specifically, we propose a mixture distribution model for the stereo-matching results, where the degree of anisotropy is modeled as an underlying error source. Then, a Bayesian filtering method is proposed for dense 3D point cloud generation. For real-time applications, redundancy in multi-aspect observations is further exploited in a probabilistic manner to accelerate the stereo-reconstruction process. To verify the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed method, 3D point cloud generation is tested on Ku-band drone SAR data for a domestic airport area.

Radargrammetric DSM Generation by Semi-Global Matching and Evaluation of Penalty Functions

Radargrammetry is a useful approach to generate Digital Surface Models (DSMs) and an alternative to InSAR techniques that are subject to temporal or atmospheric decorrelation. Stereo image matching in radargrammetry refers to the process of determining homologous points in two images. The performance of image matching influences the final quality of DSM used for spatial-temporal analysis of landscapes and terrain. In SAR image matching, local matching methods are commonly used but usually produce sparse and inaccurate homologous points adding ambiguity to final products; global or semi-global matching methods are seldom applied even though more accurate and dense homologous points can be yielded. To fill this gap, we propose a hierarchical semi-global matching (SGM) pipeline to reconstruct DSMs in forested and mountainous regions using stereo TerraSAR-X images. In addition, three penalty functions were implemented in the pipeline and evaluated for effectiveness. To make accuracy and efficiency comparisons between our SGM dense matching method and the local matching method, the normalized cross-correlation (NCC) local matching method was also applied to generate DSMs using the same test data. The accuracy of radargrammetric DSMs was validated against an airborne photogrammetric reference DSM and compared with the accuracy of NASA’s 30 m SRTM DEM. The results show the SGM pipeline produces DSMs with height accuracy and computing efficiency that exceeds the SRTM DEM and NCC-derived DSMs. The penalty function adopting the Canny edge detector yields a higher vertical precision than the other two evaluated penalty functions. SGM is a powerful and efficient tool to produce high-quality DSMs using stereo Spaceborne SAR images.

Stereo Radargrammetry Using Deep Learning-Based Image Matching with Fine-Tuned Model on Synthetic Aperture Radar Images

Stereo radargrammetry using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images is a powerful technique for all-weather 3D topographic measurements. However, conventional methods based on local template matching often struggle to establish accurate correspondences in mountainous or vegetated areas due to severe SAR-specific geometric modulations. In this paper, we propose a novel high-accuracy stereo radargrammetry framework by introducing RoMa, a robust Transformer-based deep learning model, for dense SAR image matching. Optical pre-trained deep learning models often suffer from a domain gap. To overcome this limitation, we develop an automated pipeline to construct a patch-based SAR image dataset using a reference Digital Surface Model (DSM) and an SAR projection model. By fine-tuning RoMa on this dataset, the model effectively adapts to the complex non-linear deformations of SAR images. Furthermore, unlike conventional methods, our approach establishes correspondences directly on the original slant-range images without requiring ground-range projection, thereby avoiding image quality degradation caused by pixel interpolation. Experimental results using airborne Pi-SAR2 images demonstrate that the fine-tuned RoMa significantly outperforms conventional methods, achieving an 82.86% matching accuracy at a 10-pixel threshold. In the 3D measurement evaluation, the proposed method achieves the lowest elevation mean error (−1.24 m) and the highest inlier ratio (74.1%), proving its effectiveness in generating accurate, dense, and wide-area 3D point clouds even in challenging terrains.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images and optical imagery have high potential for extracting digital elevation models (DEMs). The two main approaches for deriving elevation models from SAR data are interferometry (InSAR) and radargrammetry. Adapted from photogrammetric principles, radargrammetry relies on disparity model estimation as its core component. Matching strategies in radargrammetry typically follow local, global, or semi-global methodologies. Local methods, while having higher accuracy, especially in low-texture SAR images, require larger kernel sizes, leading to quadratic computational complexity. Conversely, global and semi-global models produce more consistent and higher-quality disparity maps but are computationally more intensive than local methods with small kernels and require more memory (RAM). In this study, inspired by the advantages of local matching algorithms, a computationally efficient and novel model is proposed for extracting corresponding pixels in SAR-intensity stereo images. To enhance accuracy, the proposed two-stage algorithm operates without an image pyramid structure. Notably, unlike traditional local and global models, the computational complexity of the proposed approach remains stable as the input size or kernel dimensions increase while memory consumption stays low. Compared to a pyramid-based local normalized cross-correlation (NCC) algorithm and adaptive semi-global matching (SGM) models, the proposed method maintains good accuracy comparable to adaptive SGM while reducing processing time by up to 50% relative to pyramid SGM and achieving a 35-fold speedup over the local NCC algorithm with an optimal kernel size. Validated on a Sentinel-1 stereo pair with a 10 m ground-pixel size, the proposed algorithm yields a DEM with an average accuracy of 34.1 m.

An Epipolar HS-NCC Flow Algorithm for DSM Generation Using GaoFen-3 Stereo SAR Images

Radargrammetry is a widely used methodology to generate the large-scale Digital Surface Model (DSM). Stereo matching is the most challenging step in radargrammetry due to the significant geometric differences and the inherent speckle noise. The speckle noise results in significant grayscale differences of the same feature points, which makes the traditional Horn–Schunck (HS) flow or multi-window zero-mean normalized cross-correlation (ZNCC) methods degrade. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm named Epipolar HS-NCC Flow (EHNF) for dense stereo matching, which is an improved HS flow method with normalized cross-correction constraint based on epipolar stereo images. First, the epipolar geometry is applied to resample the image to realize the coarse stereo matching. Subsequently, the EHNF method forms a global energy function to achieve fine stereo matching. The EHNF method constructs a local normalized cross-correlation constraint term to compensate for the grayscale invariance constraint, especially for the SAR stereo images. Additionally, two assessment methods are proposed to calculate the optimal cross-correlation parameter and smoothness parameter according to the refined matched point pairs. Two GaoFen-3 (GF-3) image pairs from ascending and descending orbits and the open Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data are utilized to fully evaluate the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the EHNF algorithm improves the DSM elevation accuracy by 9.6% and 27.0% compared with the HS flow and multi-window ZNCC methods, respectively.

Radargrammetric 3D Imaging through Composite Registration Method Using Multi-Aspect Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery

Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and tomographic SAR measurement techniques are commonly used for the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of complex areas, while the effectiveness of these methods relies on the interferometric coherence among SAR images with minimal angular disparities. Radargrammetry exploits stereo image matching to determine the spatial coordinates of corresponding points in two SAR images and acquire their 3D properties. The performance of the image matching process directly impacts the quality of the resulting digital surface model (DSM). However, the presence of speckle noise, along with dissimilar geometric and radiometric distortions, poses considerable challenges in achieving accurate stereo SAR image matching. To address these aforementioned challenges, this paper proposes a radargrammetric method based on the composite registration of multi-aspect SAR images. The proposed method combines coarse registration using scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) with precise registration using normalized cross-correlation (NCC) to achieve accurate registration between multi-aspect SAR images with large disparities. Furthermore, the multi-aspect 3D point clouds are merged using the proposed radargrammetric 3D imaging method, resulting in the 3D imaging of target scenes based on multi-aspect SAR images. For validation purposes, this paper presents a comprehensive 3D reconstruction of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) using Ka-band airborne SAR images. It does not necessitate prior knowledge of the target and is applicable to the detailed 3D imaging of large-scale areas with complex structures. In comparison to other SAR 3D imaging techniques, it reduces the requirements for orbit control and radar system parameters. To sum up, the proposed 3D imaging method with composite registration guarantees imaging efficiency, while enhancing the imaging accuracy of crucial areas with limited data.

With the rapid development of high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, the technique that utilizes multiple two-dimensional (2-D) SAR images with different view angles to extract three-dimensional (3-D) coordinates of targets has gained wide concern in recent years. Unlike the traditional multi-channel SAR utilized for 3-D coordinate extraction, the single-channel curvilinear SAR (CLSAR) has the advantages of large variation of view angle, requiring fewer acquisition data, and lower device cost. However, due to the complex aerodynamic configuration and flight characteristics, important issues should be considered, including the mathematical model establishment, imaging geometry analysis, and high-precision extraction model design. In this paper, to address these challenges, a 3-D vector model of CLSAR was presented and the imaging geometries under different view angles were analyzed. Then, a novel 3-D coordinate extraction approach based on radargrammetry was proposed, in which the unique property of the SAR system, called cylindrical symmetry, was utilized to establish a novel extraction model. Compared with the conventional approach, the proposed one has fewer constraints on the trajectory of radar platform, requires fewer model parameters, and can obtain higher extraction accuracy without the assistance of extra ground control points (GCPs). Numerical results using simulated data demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Deep Learning-based DSM Generation from Dual-Aspect SAR Data

Rapid mapping demands efficient methods for a fast extraction of information from satellite data while minimizing data requirements. This paper explores the potential of deep learning for the generation of high-resolution urban elevation data from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. In order to mitigate occlusion effects caused by the side-looking nature of SAR remote sensing, two SAR images from opposing aspects are leveraged and processed in an end-to-end deep neural network. The presented approach is the first of its kind to implicitly handle the transition from the SAR-specific slant range geometry to a ground-based mapping geometry within the model architecture. Comparative experiments demonstrate the superiority of the dual-aspect fusion over single-image methods in terms of reconstruction quality and geolocation accuracy. Notably, the model exhibits robust performance across diverse acquisition modes and geometries, showcasing its generalizability and suitability for height mapping applications. The study’s findings underscore the potential of deep learning-driven SAR techniques in generating high-quality urban surface models efficiently and economically.

COMPARISON OF SINGLE-IMAGE URBAN HEIGHT RECONSTRUCTION FROM OPTICAL AND SAR DATA

Deep learning-based depth estimation has become an important topic in recent years, not only in the field of computer vision. Also in the context of remote sensing, scientists started a few years ago to adapt or develop suitable approaches to realize a reconstruction of the Earth’s surface without requiring several images. There are many reasons for this: First, of course, the aspect of general economization, since especially high-resolution satellite images are often accompanied by high data acquisition costs. In addition, there is also the desire to be able to acquire high-quality geoinformation as quickly as possible in time-critical cases – for example, the provision of up-to-date maps for emergency forces in disaster scenarios. Finally, a reconstruction of topography based only on single images can also provide important approximate values for the classic multi-image methods. For example, various processing steps in a classical InSAR process chain require a rough knowledge of the Earth’s surface in order to achieve the most accurate and reliable results. In this paper, we review the developments documented in the remote sensing literature so far. Using an established neural network architecture, we produce example results for both very-high-resolution SAR and optical imagery. The comparison shows that SAR-based single-image-height reconstruction seems to bear an even greater potential than single-image height reconstruction from optical data.
