Peripheral presence or transient colonist? Distribution, phenology and exploratory inferences about the origin of Agrotis herzogi Rebel, 1911 in the Iberian-Balearic area
2026
A recent rise in Iberian-Balearic records of the otherwise Sahelian/eremic noctuid moth Agrotis herzogi Rebel, 1911, fosters a need to interpret the origins, causes and outcomes of these arrivals. Based on all available evidence in the form of occurrence data in the area, its status as a resident species or only a temporary arrival and its phenology are discussed. To date, although the occurrences of the species in the area span a wide range, from Lisbon to Alicante and once in the Balearic Islands, there is a temporal and effective predominance of records in the south-west of the Iberian Peninsula. These occurrences can, moreover, be reasonably correlated with prevailing characteristic weather conditions and can reasonably be traced back to source areas in North Africa from October to April. No evidence of resident populations has yet been found. This pattern may be generalised to a number of other species previously found in North Africa that are now being recorded in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula.

How does the presence of multiple combatants affect rebel groups’ ideological and demand positioning? Although violent forms of inter-group conflict have been widely studied in the civil war literature, rebel groups’ strategic use of ideology and demands has received scarce scholarly attention. We argue that the pressure of competition forces rebel groups to differentiate themselves ideologically and demand-wise from their rivals to maximize their chances of survival and success. Rebel groups strive to set themselves apart by offering unique products to their supporters and recruits. Thus, we contend that rebel groups are more likely to modify their ideologies and demands from the government in the face of competition from rival groups. We test this theory using novel data collected from rebel group manifestos and public statements. Our findings suggest that groups are more likely to shift their ideology and modify their demands as the number of rival groups increases.

Rebel Interdependencies and Civil War Outcomes
2012
The article investigates how rebel interdependencies shape civil war outcomes. The author argues that alliances between rebel groups will have serious repercussions on the management of conflict. By examining civil war outcomes between 1946 and 2008, the author shows that the presence of multiple groups, alliances among rebels, the cumulative capabilities of one's allies as well as the credibility and the durability of alliances shape war outcomes. Rebels have the means to avoid government defeat and continue conflict when the number of rebel groups the government has to confront simultaneously is high or when these groups cooperate against their common enemy. Findings show that while termination by peace agreement is unlikely for allied rebels, specifically for those that have enduring relationships, rebels with access to high levels of ally capabilities along with those who have credible alliance ties are likely to be the victors of war.
