Fabrication of ZnO/Red Phosphorus Heterostructure for Effective Photocatalytic H2 Evolution from Water Splitting
2018
Photocatalysis is a green technique that can convert solar energy to chemical energy, especially in H2 production from water splitting. In this study, ZnO and red phosphorus (ZnO/RP) heterostructures were fabricated through a facile calcination method for the first time, which showed the considerable photocatalytic activity of H2 evolution. The photocatalytic activities of heterostructures with different ratios of RP have been investigated in detail. Compared to bare ZnO, ZnO/RP heterostructures exhibit a 20.8-fold enhancement for H2 production and furthermore overcome the photocorrosion issue of ZnO. The improved photocatalytic activities highly depend on the synergistic effect of the high migration efficiency of photo-induced electron–hole pairs with the inhibited charge carrier recombination on the surface. The presented strategy can also be applied to other semiconductors for various optoelectronics applications.

In this study, we advance a robust methodology for identifying specific intelligence-related proteins across phyla. Our approach exploits a support vector machine-based classifier capable of predicting intelligence-related proteins based on a pool of meaningful protein features. For the sake of illustration of our proposed general method, we develop a novel computational two-layer predictor, Intell_Pred, to predict query sequences (proteins or transcripts) as intelligence-related or non-intelligence-related proteins or transcripts, subsequently classifying the former sequences into learning and memory-related classes. Based on a five-fold cross-validation and independent blind test, Intell_Pred obtained an average accuracy of 87.48 and 88.89, respectively. Our findings revealed that a score >0.75 (during prediction by Intell_Pred) is a well-grounded choice for predicting intelligence-related candidate proteins in most organisms across biological kingdoms. In particular, we assessed seismonastic movements and associate learning in plants and evaluated the proteins involved using Intell_Pred. Proteins related to seismonastic movement and associate learning showed high percentages of similarities with intelligence-related proteins. Our findings lead us to believe that Intell_Pred can help identify the intelligence-related proteins and their classes using a given protein/transcript sequence.

High‐temperature operating performance of p–i–p quantum dots‐in‐a‐well infrared photodetectors (QDIPs) is successfully demonstrated. The optically active region consists of 10 layers of p‐doped self‐assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) asymmetrically positioned in In0.15Ga0.85As quantum wells (QWs). The dark current is suppressed by an incorporated superlattice (SL) structure composed of 10 pairs of AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. The very low recorded dark current makes the fabricated p–i–p QDIPs suitable for high‐temperature operation. The measured photoresponse reveals broad mid‐wave infrared (MWIR) detection up to 200 K.

long wavelength infrared p-on-n HgCdTe photodiodes
2010
An enhanced original computer programme is applied to explain in detail the current-voltage characteristics of p-on-n long wavelength infrared (LWIR) HgCdTe photodiodes. The computer programme solves the system of non-linear continuity equations for carriers and Poisson equations. In the model ideal diode diffusion, generation-recombination, band-to-band tunnelling, trap-assisted tunnelling, and impact ionization are included as potential limiting mechanisms in the photodiodes. It is a clearly explained influence of extrinsic doping of an active device region on dark current-voltage characteristics and on R0A product of HgCdTe photodiodes in a wide region of temperature and wavelengths. Special attention is directed to the dependence of tunnelling probability on the shape of potential barrier within the depletion region. The theoretical predictions are compared with experimental data of high quantity photodiodes published in the available literature.

Near-Infrared Fluorescence Detection of Acetylcholine in Aqueous Solution Using a Complex of Rhodamine 800 and p-Sulfonato-calix8arene
2010
The complexing properties of p-sulfonatocalix[n]arenes (n = 4: S[4], n = 6: S[6], and n = 8: S[8]) for rhodamine 800 (Rh800) and indocyanine green (ICG) were examined to develop a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence detection method for acetylcholine (ACh). We found that Rh800 (as a cation) forms an inclusion complex with S[n], while ICG (as a twitter ion) have no binding ability for S[n]. The binding ability of Rh800 to S[n] decreased in the order of S[8] > S[6] >> S[4]. By the formation of the complex between Rh800 and S[8], fluorescence intensity of the Rh800 was significantly decreased. From the fluorescence titration of Rh800 by S[8], stoichiometry of the Rh800-S[8] complex was determined to be 1:1 with a dissociation constant of 2.2 mM in PBS. The addition of ACh to the aqueous solution of the Rh800-S[8] complex caused a fluorescence increase of Rh800, resulting from a competitive replacement of Rh800 by ACh in the complex. From the fluorescence change by the competitive fluorophore replacement, stoichiometry of the Rh800-ACh complex was found to be 1:1 with a dissociation constant of 1.7 mM. The effects of other neurotransmitters on the fluorescence spectra of the Rh800-S[8] complex were examined for dopamine, GABA, glycine, and L-asparatic acid. Among the neurotransmitters examined, fluorescence response of the Rh800-S[8] complex was highly specific to ACh. Rh800-S[8] complexes can be used as a NIR fluorescent probe for the detection of ACh (5 × 10-4−10-3 M) in PBS buffer (pH = 7.2).

DESTROYER HEADS FROM NORFOLK TO MEDITERRANEAN
\"I would say that we're unique and getting less unique,\" he said. \"Last year when we deployed, we were the only ballistic missile defense ship on the East Coast.\" \"It's a growing capability that the Navy has, to shoot down ballistic missiles in flight,\" said [Peter G. Galluch]. \"It's fast becoming a core mission of the Navy.\" \"I would like to think that we would deter folks from even trying to make an attack,\" Galluch said. \"I'm sure they have limited numbers of missiles and want to make a political statement or something like that - whatever nation it might be.
