How to save politics in a post-truth era
The rise of populism, Donald Trump's election and the result of the EU referendum in the UK have been widely interpreted as a rejection of the post-war liberal order – the manifestation of a desire to undermine the political system that people feel has let them down. Yet mainstream politicians and analysts have been slow to grasp the changing situation, instead relying on a rhetoric of ‘hard data’ and narrow economic arguments while failing to properly engage with the politics of identity. This book argues that the relationship between methodology and politics is now more important than ever – that politics, if it is anything, is about engaging with people’s interpretations and narratives of the world in which they find themselves. Politics in this new ‘post-truth’ era will require an appreciation of the fact we live in an uncertain world of endless diversity and potential for change. This thoughtful book addresses how we might think about and do politics in these strange new times.
Implications of the Shifting Landscape of Residential Care for Volunteers’ Lived Experiences and Role Involvement
Volunteer contributions in residential care are viewed as an important way to meet older adults’ psychosocial needs in the context of strained resources and increasingly complex resident populations. The implications of this context for volunteering experiences are rarely considered. This paper presents findings from interviews with 18 volunteers and 9 facility representatives in one Canadian city. Volunteers believed they made a difference through filling care and human resource gaps, helping both residents and paid employees. Organizational regulations at times limited their abilities to help residents, connect with residents relationally, and their integration within care teams. Organizational expectations could also pose a challenge for volunteers’ autonomy, and some actively resisted a formal role. Interactions with residents with advanced dementia challenged volunteers’ perceptions of effectiveness, appreciation, and emotional connection. Implications are discussed in relation to the needs of paid employees and care recipients, as well as training, regulating, managing, and retaining residential care volunteers.
A Woodcut and Its Wanderings in Seventeenth-Century England
ABSTRACT This essay traces the career of a distinctive woodcut picture that appears on dozens of seventeenth-century ballad broadsheets. Christopher Marsh argues that woodcuts have often been neglected by scholars and that they deserve careful attention. The common habit of redeploying old pictures on new ballads may, for example, have encouraged consumers to build associations between individual woodcuts and particular characteristics or themes. In order to understand the visual aesthetic of early-modern balladry, it is therefore necessary to think in fresh and creative ways about the effects of the repetition of pictures on cognition. KEYWORDS: relationship between ballads and their illustrations; reuse of woodcuts in printing; depictions of courtship; role of familiarity in interpretation of images
