Rough Differential Equations Containing Path-Dependent Bounded Variation Terms
We consider rough differential equations whose coefficients contain path-dependent bounded variation terms and prove the existence and a priori estimate of solutions. These equations include classical path-dependent stochastic differential equations containing running maximum processes and normal reflection terms. We apply these results to determine the topological support of the solution processes.
A Fourier Analysis Based New Look at Integration
We approach the problem of integration for rough integrands and integrators, typically representing trajectories of stochastic processes possessing only some Hölder regularity of possibly low order, in the framework of para-control calculus. For this purpose, we first decompose integrand and integrator into Paley–Littlewood packages along the Haar–Schauder system. By careful estimation of the components of products of packages of the integrand and derivatives of the integrator we obtain a characterization of Young’s integral. For the most interesting case of functions with Hölder regularities that sum up to an order below 1 we have to employ the concept of para-control of integrand and integrator with respect to a reference function for which a version of antisymmetric Lévy area is known to exist. This way we obtain an interpretation of the rough path integral. Lévy areas being known for most frequently used stochastic processes such as (fractional) Brownian motion, this integral serves as a basis for pathwise stochastic calculus, as the integral in classical rough path analysis.
Rough Paths above Weierstrass Functions
Rough paths theory allows for a pathwise theory of solutions to differential equations driven by highly irregular signals. The fundamental observation of rough paths theory is that if one can define “iterated integrals” above a signal, then one can construct solutions to differential equations driven by the signal. The typical examples of the signals of interest are stochastic processes such as (fractional) Brownian motion. However, rough paths theory is not inherently random and therefore can treat irregular deterministic driving signals such as a (vector-valued) Weierstrass function. This note supplies a construction of a rough path above vector-valued Weierstrass functions.
CANONICAL RDES AND GENERAL SEMIMARTINGALES AS ROUGH PATHS
In the spirit of Marcus canonical stochastic differential equations, we study a similar notion of rough differential equations (RDEs), notably dropping the assumption of continuity prevalent in the rough path literature. A new metric is exhibited in which the solution map is a continuous function of the driving rough path and a so-called path function, which directly models the effect of the jump on the system. In a second part, we show that general multidimensional semimartingales admit canonically defined rough path lifts. An extension of Lépingle’s BDG inequality to this setting is given, and in turn leads to a number of novel limit theorems for semimartingale driven differential equations, both in law and in probability, conveniently phrased a uniformly-controlled-variations (UCV) condition (Kurtz–Protter, Jakubowski–Mémin–Pagès). A number of examples illustrate the scope of our results.
PRECISE ASYMPTOTICS
We present a new methodology to analyze large classes of (classical and rough) stochastic volatility models, with special regard to short-time and small noise formulae for option prices. Our main tool is the theory of regularity structures, which we use in the form of Bayer et al. (Math. Finance 30 (2020) 782–832) In essence, we implement a Laplace method on the space of models (in the sense of Hairer), which generalizes classical works of Azencott and Ben Arous on path space and then Aida, Inahama–Kawabi on rough path space. When applied to rough volatility models, for example, in the setting of Bayer, Friz and Gatheral (Quant. Finance 16 (2016) 887–904) and Forde–Zhang (SIAM J. Financial Math. 8 (2017) 114–145), one obtains precise asymptotics for European options which refine known large deviation asymptotics.
CHARACTERISTIC FUNCTIONS OF MEASURES ON GEOMETRIC ROUGH PATHS
We define a characteristic function for probability measures on the signatures of geometric rough paths. We determine sufficient conditions under which a random variable is uniquely determined by its expected signature, thus partially solving the analogue of the moment problem. We furthermore study analyticity properties of the characteristic function and prove a method of moments for weak convergence of random variables. We apply our results to signature arising from Lévy, Gaussian and Markovian rough paths.
GENERAL ROUGH INTEGRATION, LÉVY ROUGH PATHS AND A LÉVY–KINTCHINE-TYPE FORMULA
We consider rough paths with jumps. In particular, the analogue of Lyons' extension theorem and rough integration are established in a jump setting, offering a pathwise view on stochastic integration against càdlàg processes. A class of Lévy rough paths is introduced and characterized by a sub-ellipticity condition on the left-invariant diffusion vector fields and a certain integrability property of the Carnot–Caratheodory norm with respect to the Lévy measure on the group, using Hunt's framework of Lie group valued Lévy processes. Examples of Lévy rough paths include a standard multi-dimensional Lévy process enhanced with a stochastic area as constructed by D. Williams, the pure area Poisson process and Brownian motion in a magnetic field. An explicit formula for the expected signature is given.
ON A ROUGH PERTURBATION OF THE NAVIER–STOKES SYSTEM AND ITS VORTICITY FORMULATION
We introduce a rough perturbation of the Navier–Stokes system and justify its physical relevance from balance of momentum and conservation of circulation in the inviscid limit. We present a framework for a well-posedness analysis of the system. In particular, we define an intrinsic notion of strong solution based on ideas from the rough path theory and study the system in an equivalent vorticity formulation. In two space dimensions, we prove that well-posedness and enstrophy balance holds. Moreover, we derive rough path continuity of the equation, which yields a Wong–Zakai result for Brownian driving paths, and show that for a large class of driving signals, the system generates a continuous random dynamical system. In dimension three, the noise is not enstrophy balanced, and we establish the existence of local in time solutions.
PATHWISE STOCHASTIC CONTROL WITH APPLICATIONS TO ROBUST FILTERING
We study the problem of pathwise stochastic optimal control, where the optimization is performed for each fixed realisation of the driving noise, by phrasing the problem in terms of the optimal control of rough differential equations. We investigate the degeneracy phenomenon induced by directly controlling the coefficient of the noise term, and propose a simple procedure to resolve this degeneracy whilst retaining dynamic programming. As an application, we use pathwise stochastic control in the context of stochastic filtering to construct filters which are robust to parameter uncertainty, demonstrating an original application of rough path theory to statistics.
FIRST-ORDER EULER SCHEME FOR SDES DRIVEN BY FRACTIONAL BROWNIAN MOTIONS
In this article, we consider the so-called modified Euler scheme for stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by fractional Brownian motions (fBm) with Hurst parameter ⅓ < H < ½. This is a first-order time-discrete numerical approximation scheme, and has been introduced in [Ann. Appl. Probab. 26 (2016) 1147–1207] recently in order to generalize the classical Euler scheme for Itô SDEs to the case H > ½. The current contribution generalizes the modified Euler scheme to the rough case ⅓ < H < ½. Namely, we show a convergence rate of order n ½−2H for the scheme, and we argue that this rate is exact. We also derive a central limit theorem for the renormalized error of the scheme, thanks to some new techniques for asymptotics of weighted random sums. Our main idea is based on the following observation: the triple of processes obtained by considering the fBm, the scheme process and the normalized error process, can be lifted to a new rough path. In addition, the Hölder norm of this new rough path has an estimate which is independent of the step-size of the scheme.
