Avant-garde as method : Vkhutemas and the pedagogy of space, 1920-1930
With Avant-Garde as Method, architect and historian Anna Bokov explores the nature of art and technology education in the Soviet Union. The pedagogical program at Vkhutemas, she shows, combined longstanding academic ideas and practices with more nascent industrial era ones to initiate a new type of pedagogy that took an explorative approach and drew its strength from continuous feedback and exchange between students and educators. Elaborating on the ways the Vkhutemas curriculum challenged established canons of academic tradition by replacing it with open-ended inquiry, Bokov then shows how this came to be articulated in architectural and urban projects within the school's advanced studios.
THE NECESSITY OF ARCHITECTURAL SCHOOLS’ ATTENTION TO THE SOCIAL CONTEXT BASED ON THE RECIPROCAL RELATIONSHIP ETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND SOCIETY
The main objective of this research is to discuss the mission of architectural schools towards society and to demonstrate the necessity of these institutions’ attention to their social context. Accordingly, the main research question is: based on the nature of architectural knowledge, what is the necessity for architectural faculties to pay attention to their social context? This research employs a qualitative approach based on library studies, utilizing logical reasoning and interpretive analysis methods for data analysis. The findings present a theoretical model of the reciprocal relationship between architecture and society, according to which architecture is defined as an inherently social knowledge, and social life as an arena intertwined with architectural needs. This intertwining makes it impossible for architectural schools to disregard their social context and highlights the necessity of these institutions’ responsibility towards society. Therefore, architectural faculties, as the primary institutions for training architects, are obliged to recognize and acknowledge people’s architecture as a document of the architectural state of society and strive to improve its quality
Interpretation of Space Syntax in Higher Education: A Study of Functional Efficiency in Architecture Schools in Erbil
Assessing a built environment’s functional performance and physical and psychological impact is essential for understanding its effect on users, particularly in higher education, where it informs the creation of effective learning spaces. This study aims to explore the application of Space Syntax Theory in a higher-educational context and examines the functional efficiency of three architecture schools in Erbil: Salahaddin University-Erbil, Koya University, and Cihan University-Erbil. Using a quantitative research paradigm, the study employs space-syntax methodologies, including axial map analysis and justified graphs, to evaluate key syntactical parameters such as mean depth, relative asymmetry (RA), real relative asymmetry (RRA), real ring-ness (R-value), and the difference factor (H*). The analysis, conducted via Depthmap X software, examines spatial permeability and connectivity within educational layouts, providing insights into their functional performance. The findings indicate that the architecture school at Cihan University-Erbil, characterised by a ring-like spatial structure, achieves a moderate level of functional performance, outperforming Salahaddin University-Erbil and Koya University. Moreover, productive spaces consistently exhibit higher functional performance than supportive spaces across all case studies. This research proposes a framework for optimising spatial configurations in higher education, providing evidence-based strategies to enhance functionality and promote best practices in educational architecture.
Design culture in liverpool 1880-1914
By the 1930s the Liverpool School of Architecture was the most famous British school of architecture in the world, promoting modern architecture and city planning internationally. This book looks at the cultural environment in Liverpool at the turn of the twentieth century which enabled such an important institution to come to fruition. It examines attitudes towards design practice through the work of patrons, practitioners, institutions and theorists in the city, and considers the way their ideas were formed by national and international trends. From a city microcosm of contesting design aesthetics emerged a unique synthesis that was to exert a profound international influence in architectural and planning design.
School spaces for student wellbeing and learning : insights from research and practice
This book introduces a new wellbeing dimension to the theory and practice of learning space design for early childhood and school contexts. It highlights vital, yet generally overlooked relationships between the learning environment and student learning and wellbeing, and reveals the potential of participatory, values-based design approaches to create learning spaces that respond to contemporary learners' needs. Focusing on three main themes it explores conceptual understandings of learning spaces and wellbeing; students' lived experience and needs of learning spaces; and the development of a new theory and its practical application to the design of learning spaces that enhance student wellbeing. It examines these complex and interwoven topics through various theoretical lenses and provides an extensive, current literature review that connects learning environment design and learner wellbeing in a wide range of educational settings from early years to secondary school.
