Electrochemical sensing strategies for on‐site testing of pathogenic nucleic acids
Rapid and reliable on‐site pathogen testing is crucial for diagnosing and managing human health. Nucleic acids (NAs) containing genetic information are valuable target molecules for pathogen testing, and sensitive and rapid detection of NAs using electrochemical approaches has been intensively investigated. Detection approaches for NAs are diverse and compatible with current gene amplification methods and continue to expand with the development of novel functional materials and molecules. The variety of electrochemical sensing devices also continues to expand, and more practical testing is being pursued. This review outlines the latest detection approaches and basic guidelines for NA detection. Furthermore, this review provides an overview of electrochemical sensing devices that utilize novel and unique materials and functions and comprehensively discusses their advantages.

The Night Sky Spectrum of Xinglong Observatory: Changes from 2004 to 2015
We present spectroscopic measurements on the night sky of Xinglong Observatory for a period of 12 years from 2004 to 2015. The spectra were obtained on moonless clear nights using the OMR spectrograph mounted on a 2.16-m reflector with a wavelength coverage of 4000-7000 . The night sky spectrum shows the presence of emission lines from Hg i and Na i due to local artificial sources, along with the atmospheric emission lines, i.e., O i and OH molecules, indicating the existence of light pollution. We have monitored the night sky brightness during the whole night and found some decrement in the sky brightness with time, but the change is not significant. Also, we monitored the light pollution level in different azimuthal directions and found that the influence of light pollution from the direction of Beijing is stronger compared with that from the direction of Tangshan and other areas. An analysis of night sky spectra for the entire data set suggested that the zenith sky brightness of Xinglong Observatory has brightened by about 0.5 mag arcsec−2 in the V and B bands from 2004 to 2015. We recommend consecutive spectroscopic measurements of the night sky brightness at Xinglong Observatory in the future, not only for monitoring but also for scientific reference.
The Nevada Test Site
\"Emmet Gowin likes to ask a provocative question: \"Which country on earth has had the largest number of nuclear bombs detonated within its borders?\" The answer is the United States. Covering approximately 680 square miles, the Nevada National Security Site, formerly known as the Nevada Test Site, was the primary testing location of American nuclear devices from 1951 to 1992; 1,021 announced nuclear tests occurred there, 921 of which were underground. The site, which is closed to the public, including its airspace, contains 28 areas, 1,100 buildings, 400 miles of paved roads, 300 miles of unpaved roads, 10 heliports, and two airstrips. Its surface is covered with subsidence craters from testing, and in places looks like the moon. In 1996, Gowin received permission to document the landscape by air, after over a decade of working to secure access. These aerial views of environmental devastation--made quietly majestic but no less potent in the hands of a master photographer--unveil environmental travesties on a grand scale. While groups of images from the Nevada Test Site series have been published previously, this book will produce the largest number yet, and three quarters of the pictures will not have been published at all. Gowin is the only photographer to have been granted access to this site, which is now permanently closed, post-9/11. Other than images made by the government for geographic purposes, no other images of this landscape exist. The book will feature a preface by photographer Robert Adams (America, b. 1937), whose photographic and written work is concerned with landscape, urbanization, and activism. Assessing AstroSat bus jitter from UVIT data of small magallenic cloud
We utilize data from the ultra-violet imaging telescope (UVIT) data to make an assessment of the high-frequency pointing stability, called the jitter ([2 Hz), of the AstroSat bus. We find a pointing stability of 0.06 arcsec standard deviation with no significant frequency response between 1 and 14 Hz, aside from a temporary effect at 2.4 and 5.2 Hz upon the telescope pointing induced from movements of the SSM camera
Multiplexed Point-of-Care Testing – xPOCT
Multiplexed point-of-care testing (xPOCT), which is simultaneous on-site detection of different analytes from a single specimen, has recently gained increasing importance for clinical diagnostics, with emerging applications in resource-limited settings (such as in the developing world, in doctors’ offices, or directly at home). Nevertheless, only single-analyte approaches are typically considered as the major paradigm in many reviews of point-of-care testing. Here, we comprehensively review the present diagnostic systems and techniques for xPOCT applications. Different multiplexing technologies (e.g., bead- or array-based systems) are considered along with their detection methods (e.g., electrochemical or optical). We also address the unmet needs and challenges of xPOCT. Finally, we critically summarize the in-field applicability and the future perspectives of the presented approaches. Simultaneous on-site measurement of different substances from a single sample, called multiplexed point-of-care testing, has recently become more and more important for in vitro diagnostics. The major aim for the development of xPOCT systems is the smart combination of a high-performing device with a low system complexity. Thus, the on-site tests are realized in a short time by non-experts and ensure comparable results with clinical and central laboratory findings. A multiplexing capability of up to 10 analytes has been sufficient for many recent xPOCT applications. The future of xPOCT devices will be driven by novel biotechnologies (e.g., aptamers) or targets (e.g., circulating RNAs or tumor cells, exosomes, and miRNAs), as well as applications like personalized medicine, homecare monitoring, and wearables.
Towards data-driven culture in a Spanish automobile manufacturer: A case study
Purpose: Data-driven decision-making is a growing trend that lots of companies are nowadays willing to adopt. However, the organizational transformation needed is not always as simple and logical as it could seem and the comfort of the old habits can dim the change effort. The purpose of this study is to identify the potential problems that may arise in a real company's transformation from a traditional intuition-driven decision-making model to a data-driven model. Design/methodology/approach: In order to reach this goal, a single case study method was used. Initially a literature review was conducted to analyze both the importance of the change to a data-driven culture and the process of organizational change. Thus, a case study method was adopted in a company of the automotive sector that included experimentation in the website design decision-making process. Findings: As a result of the case study, it was found that all the most cited risks for the organizational change process commented in the literature appeared in the project. However, even being warned of potential dangers the specific actions to prevent the damages were not trivial. Originality/value: The study presents in detail, the application of an organizational change model in a company. Important insights can be extracted from the specific case of a digitalization performed inside traditional industrial company.
Clinical Evaluation of Roche SD Biosensor Rapid Antigen Test for SARS-CoV-2 in Municipal Health Service Testing Site, the Netherlands
Rapid detection of infection is essential for stopping the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The Roche SD Biosensor rapid antigen test for SARS-CoV-2 was evaluated in a nonhospitalized symptomatic population. We rapid-tested a sample onsite and compared results with those from reverse transcription PCR and virus culture. We analyzed date of onset and symptoms using data from a clinical questionnaire. Overall test sensitivity was 84.9% (95% CI 79.1-89.4) and specificity was 99.5% (95% CI 98.7-99.8). Sensitivity increased to 95.8% (95% CI 90.5-98.2) for persons who sought care within 7 days of symptom onset. Test band intensity and time to result correlated strongly with viral load; thus, strong positive results could be read before the recommended time. Approximately 98% of all viable specimens with cycle threshold <30 were detected. Rapid antigen tests can detect symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections in the early phase of disease, thereby identifying the most infectious persons.
