Interpreting Plato's Dialogues
2015
Ennead VI.4-5, originally written as a single treatise, contains Plotinus' most general and sustained exposition of the relationship between the intelligible and the sensible realms, addressing and coalescing two central issues in Platonism: the nature of the soul-body relationship and the nature of participation. Its main question is, How can soul animate bodies without sharing their extension? The treatise seems to have had considerable impact: it is much reflected in Porphyry's important work, Sententiae, and the doctrine of reception according to the capacity of the recipient, for which this treatise is the main source, resonated in medieval thinkers.

Christian heresies -- France -- History -- Middle Ages, 600-1500
2023
In A Diabolical Voice , Justine L. Trombley traces the
afterlife of the Mirror of Simple Souls , which circulated
anonymously for two centuries in four languages, though not without
controversy or condemnation. Widely recognized as one of the most
unusual and important mystical treatises of the late Middle Ages,
the Mirror was condemned in Paris in 1310 as a heretical
work, and its author, Marguerite Porete, was burned at the stake.
Trombley identifies alongside the work's increasing positive
reception a parallel trend of opposition and condemnation centered
specifically around its Latin translation. She's discovered
fourteenth- and fifteenth-century theologians, canon lawyers,
inquisitors, and other churchmen who were entirely ignorant of the
Mirror's author and its condemnation and saw in the work dangerous
heresies that demanded refutation and condemnation of their
own.
Using new evidence from the Mirror 's largely overlooked
Latin manuscript tradition, A Diabolical Voice charts the
range of negative reactions to the Mirror, from confiscations and
physical destruction to academic refutations and vicious
denunciations of its supposedly fiendish doctrines. This parallel
story of opposition shows how heresy remained an integral part of
the Mirror 's history well beyond the events of 1310,
revealing how seriously churchmen took Marguerite Porete's ideas on
their own terms, in contexts entirely removed from Marguerite's
identity and her fate. Emphasizing the complexity of the Mirror
of Simple Souls and its reception, Trombley makes clear that
this influential book continues to yield new perspectives and
understandings.
Souls-Souls Dialectic: A Proponent of Ubuntu Philosophy in Fostering Critical Solidarities
2026
The Master-Slave Dialectic has been used to understand the colonial influence that still permeates society today. It has also been used to understand the nuances of history and the dynamics between the oppressed and the oppressor. This article seeks to reframe, re-theorise, and re-place the Master-Slave/Lord-Bondsman Dialectic with the Souls-Souls Dialectic. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to dismantling colonial ways of being, practices, and terminology that continue to plague Africa and the rest of the formerly/currently colonised world, instilling Ubuntu and the ethics of care into research practices. This paper, informed by post-structuralist, critical, and interpretive theoretical framings, uses problematisation as a method to deeply evaluate and develop more nuanced understandings of the ideas that underpin other ideas. Dialectic interrogation is used to engage the Lord-Bondsman Dialectic. This engagement goes beyond the view of the powerful and the powerless. It encourages recognition and respect of the Souls of the parties involved, tapping into depths beyond skin colour or social status. This paper argues that unless there is a transition toward a postcolonial space, the continued retention of destructive colonial norms will further erode the human soul.
