The Empire of Effects

Just about every major film now comes to us with an assist from
digital effects. The results are obvious in superhero fantasies,
yet dramas like Roma also rely on computer-generated
imagery to enhance the verisimilitude of scenes. But the realism of
digital effects is not actually true to life. It is a realism
invented by Hollywood-by one company specifically: Industrial Light
& Magic.
The Empire of Effects shows how the effects company
known for the puppets and space battles of the original Star
Wars went on to develop the dominant aesthetic of digital
realism. Julie A. Turnock finds that ILM borrowed its technique
from the New Hollywood of the 1970s, incorporating lens flares,
wobbly camerawork, haphazard framing, and other cinematography that
called attention to the person behind the camera. In the context of
digital imagery, however, these aesthetic strategies had the
opposite effect, heightening the sense of realism by calling on
tropes suggesting the authenticity to which viewers were
accustomed. ILM's style, on display in the most successful films of
the 1980s and beyond, was so convincing that other studios were
forced to follow suit, and today, ILM is a victim of its own
success, having fostered a cinematic monoculture in which it is but
one player among many.

Since the very first days of cinema, audiences have marveled at the special effects imagery presented on movie screens. While long relegated to the margins of film studies, special effects have recently become the object of a burgeoning field of scholarship. With the emergence of a digital cinema, and the development of computerized visual effects, film theorists and historians have been reconsidering the traditional accounts of cinematic representation, recognising the important role of special effects. Understood as a constituent part of the cinema, special effects are a major technical but also aesthetic component of filmmaking and an important part of the experience for the audience. In this volume, new directions are charted for the exploration of this indispensable aspect of the cinematic experience. Each of the essays in this collection offers new insight into the theoretical and historical study of special effects. Die vorliegende Studie behandelt die Themen Medienbildung und Medienerlebnisse von Kindern im Elementarbereich. Besonders in Kindertageseinrichtungen tauchen heutzutage Medienhelden aus unterschiedlichen Serien und Filmen vermehrt im Alltagsgeschehen auf, sodass bei Erziehern häufig Fragen aufkommen. Was finden Kinder eigentlich so reizvoll an den Hunden der PAW Patrol oder den Ninjago? Und wie sollten pädagogische Fachkräfte mit der Fülle an kindlichen Medienerlebnissen adäquat umgehen? Diesen Aspekten wird in der empirischen Arbeit nachgegangen, indem Interviews mit Kindern geführt wurden und die Kinder nach ihrem Erleben und Verhalten während sowie nach dem Konsum von Fernsehen gefragt wurden. Sie wurden zudem gebeten, jeweils eine Zeichnung von ihrem Medienhelden anzufertigen. Aus den Gesprächen mit den Kindern resultierten spannende und sehr unterschiedliche Ergebnisse. In Zusammenhang mit weiterführender, wissenschaftlich fundierter Literatur wurden daraus pädagogische Handreichungen für Eltern und pädagogische Fachkräfte entwickelt.
