It is easy to dismiss advertising as simply the background chatter of modern life, often annoying, sometimes hilarious, and ultimately meaningless. But Kerri P. Steinberg argues that a careful study of the history of advertising can reveal a wealth of insight into a culture. This chapter presents the author's views and experiences on brand positioning.He was recently sitting around at a conference room table, surrounded by a sea of paper, working with a colleague on a brand positioning assignment for a client. They had not even completed research. When they reconvened, the author tole three words that came to his mind, which suggested a creative leap, right past the positioning to a tagline. A person can spend weeks, even months, immersed in research, but insights often come in a flash of recognition. One clear insight is worth a thousand data points. Sometimes too much data can interfere with understanding. The secret is to combine what the person knows with what he feels, in order to push for new ideas and better solutions. If he can do that, he has a future in this the advertising business.
