Polish Jewish Culture beyond the Capital: Centering the
Periphery is a path-breaking exploration of the diversity and
vitality of urban Jewish identity and culture in Polish lands from
the second half of the nineteenth century to the outbreak of the
Second World War (1899-1939). In this multidisciplinary essay
collection, a cohort of international scholars provides an
integrated history of the arts and humanities in Poland by
illuminating the complex roles Jews in urban centers other than
Warsaw played in the creation of Polish and Polish Jewish culture.
Each essay presents readers with the extraordinary production and
consumption of culture by Polish Jews in literature, film, cabaret,
theater, the visual arts, architecture, and music. They show how
this process was defined by a reciprocal cultural exchange that
flourished between cities at the periphery-from Lwów and Wilno to
Kraków and Łódź-and international centers like Warsaw, thereby
illuminating the place of Polish Jews within urban European

Personality and interest in the visual arts
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between personality and interest in the visual arts in a sample of Moroccan workers.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were gathered from 210 respondents to an online survey.
Findings
Results indicate that interest in the visual arts is associated with openness and sensation seeking, even after controlling for income and education.
Practical implications
This study suggests that to increase consumption of visual arts products or experiences, arts marketers should focus on the personality traits of openness and sensation seeking rather than the demographic variables of income and education.
Originality/value
Results extend conclusions about openness and interest in the visual arts to a non-student sample and extend the importance of sensation seeking to visual art interests as opposed to visual art preferences and art judgement. This study also represents the first empirical examination of interest in the arts in Morocco.

The Portuguese Restoration of 1640 and Its Global Visualization
The Portuguese Restoration of 1640 ended the dynastic union of Portugal and Spain. This book pioneers in reconstructing the global image discourse related to the event by bringing together visualizations from three decades and four continents. These include paintings, engravings, a statue, coins, emblems, miniatures, a miraculous crosier and other regalia, buildings, textiles, a castrum doloris, drawings, and ivory statues. Situated within the academic field of visual studies, the book interrogates the role of images and depictions before, during, and after the overthrow and how they functioned within the intercontinental communication processes in the Portuguese Empire. The results challenge the conventional notion of center and periphery and reveal unforeseen entanglements as well as an unexpected agency of imagery from the remotest regions under Portuguese control. The book breaks new ground in linking the field of early modern political iconography with transcultural art history and visual studies.

Quatre Peintres Belges au Travail: Paul Haesaerts’s Film on Edgar Tytgat, Albert Dasnoy, Jean Brusselmans and Paul Delvaux (1952)
Belgian art historian and filmmaker Paul Haesaerts (1901–1974) made a significant contribution to the promotion of modern Flemish art. In the late 1940s, he started experimenting with the medium of film to practice a new form of lens-based art criticism. The understudied documentary Quatre peintres belges au travail (1952) presents Belgian artists Edgar Tytgat, Albert Dasnoy, Jean Brusselmans and Paul Delvaux at work in their studio. On a large sheet of glass placed in front of the camera, they each paint one of the seasons that also represent a stage in a person’s life. A close reading of this Kodachrome color film sheds light on the context of mid-century art reproductions, mass media and post-war Flemish culture. It also examines in what way this film operates as Haesaerts’s concept of cinéma critique, while raising questions as to the way Haesaerts attempted to reconcile the spatial art of painting with the temporal medium of film.
