Fetal Electrocardiogram Signal Extraction Based on Fast Independent Component Analysis and Singular Value Decomposition
2022
Fetal electrocardiograms (FECGs) provide important clinical information for early diagnosis and intervention. However, FECG signals are extremely weak and are greatly influenced by noises. FECG signal extraction and detection are still challenging. In this work, we combined the fast independent component analysis (FastICA) algorithm with singular value decomposition (SVD) to extract FECG signals. The improved wavelet mode maximum method was applied to detect QRS waves and ST segments of FECG signals. We used the abdominal and direct fetal ECG database (ADFECGDB) and the Cardiology Challenge Database (PhysioNet2013) to verify the proposed algorithm. The signal-to-noise ratio of the best channel signal reached 45.028 dB and the issue of missing waveforms was addressed. The sensitivity, positive predictive value and F1 score of fetal QRS wave detection were 96.90%, 98.23%, and 95.24%, respectively. The proposed algorithm may be used as a new method for FECG signal extraction and detection.

Method for Denoising the Vibration Signal of Rotating Machinery through VMD and MODWPT
2023
The vibration signals from rotating machinery are constantly mixed with other noises during the acquisition process, which has a negative impact on the accuracy of signal feature extraction. For vibration signals from rotating machinery, the conventional linear filtering-based denoising method is ineffective. To address this issue, this paper suggests an enhanced signal denoising method based on maximum overlap discrete wavelet packet transform (MODWPT) and variational mode decomposition (VMD). VMD decomposes the vibration signal of rotating machinery to produce a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). By computing the composite weighted entropy (CWE), the phantom IMF component is then removed. In the end, the sensitive component is obtained by computing the value of the degree of difference (DID) after the high-frequency noise component has been decomposed through MODWPT. The denoised signal reconstructs the signal’s intrinsic characteristics as well as the denoised high-frequency IMF component. This technique was used to analyze the simulated and real-world signals of gear faults and it was compared to wavelet threshold denoising (WTD), empirical mode decomposition reconstruction denoising (EMD-RD), and ensemble empirical mode decomposition wavelet threshold denoising (EEMD-WTD). The outcomes demonstrate that this method can accurately extract the signal feature information while filtering out the noise components in the signal.

Structural vibration analysis often involves evaluating power spectral density to understand vibration processes. However, these spectra typically include overlapping vibration modes, complicating the analysis of individual components. This study presents a method to separate vibration modes into distinct components, simplifying structural vibration analysis. By combining maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform with fast Fourier transform, the composite vibration signal is decomposed into frequency-specific components. This approach enables precise analysis of individual vibration modes, facilitating the detection of those most sensitive to structural changes. Furthermore, the method effectively removes noise and irrelevant vibrations, enhancing the accuracy and reliability of structural evaluations.

2022
The compound fault acoustic signal of a rolling bearing has the characteristics of a varying noise mixture, a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and nonlinearity, which makes it difficult to separate and extract exactly the fault features of compound fault signals. A fault feature extraction approach combining adaptive variational modal decomposition (AVMD) and improved multiverse optimization (IMVO) algorithm parameterized maximum correlated kurtosis deconvolution (MCKD)—named AVMD-IMVO-MCKD—is proposed. In order to adaptively select the parameters of VMD and MCKD, an adaptive optimization method of VMD is proposed, and an improved multiverse optimization (IMVO) algorithm is proposed to determine the parameters of MCKD. Firstly, the acoustic signal of bearing compound faults is decomposed by AVMD to generate several modal components, and the optimal modal component is selected as the reconstruction signal depending on the minimum information entropy of the modal components. Secondly, IMVO is utilized to select the parameters of MCKD, and then MCKD processing is performed on the reconstructed signal. Finally, the compound fault features of the bearing are extracted by the envelope spectrum. Both simulation analysis and acoustic signal experimental data analysis show that the proposed approach can efficiently extract the acoustic signal fault features of bearing compound faults.

Short-Term Power Load Forecasting Method Based on Feature Selection and Co-Optimization of Hyperparameters
2024
The current power load exhibits strong nonlinear and stochastic characteristics, increasing the difficulty of short-term prediction. To more accurately capture data features and enhance prediction accuracy and generalization ability, in this paper, we propose an efficient approach for short-term electric load forecasting that is grounded in a synergistic strategy of feature optimization and hyperparameter tuning. Firstly, a dynamic adjustment strategy based on the rate of the change of historical optimal values is introduced to enhance the PID-based Search Algorithm (PSA), enabling the real-time adjustment and optimization of the search process. Subsequently, the proposed Improved Population-based Search Algorithm (IPSA) is employed to achieve the optimal adaptive variational mode decomposition of the load sequence, thereby reducing data volatility. Next, for each load component, a Bi-directional Gated Recurrent Unit network with an attention mechanism (BiGRU-Attention) is established. By leveraging the interdependence between feature selection and hyperparameter optimization, we propose a synergistic optimization strategy based on the Improved Population-based Search Algorithm (IPSA). This approach ensures that the input features and hyperparameters for each component’s predictive model achieve an optimal combination, thereby enhancing prediction performance. Finally, the optimal parameter prediction model is used for multi-step rolling forecasting, with the final prediction values obtained through superposition and reconstruction. The case study results indicate that this method can achieve an adaptive optimization of hybrid prediction model parameters, providing superior prediction accuracy compared to the commonly used methods. Additionally, the method demonstrates robust adaptability to load forecasting across various day types and seasons. Consequently, this approach enhances the accuracy of short-term load forecasting, thereby supporting more efficient power scheduling and resource allocation.

MODWT and VMD Based Intelligent Gearbox Early Stage Fault Detection Approach
2021
Gearbox, a crucial constituent of any plant machinery, always requires special attention as it has to perform under considerable environmental conditions throughout its service life. Hence, the tracking of gearbox performance degradation is paramount to ensure the reliability and availability of the whole system. This performance degradation assessment is often based on the vibration-based condition monitoring program which extracts the fault signatures from the raw vibration signals. Then, based on the previous known values from ISO standards a comparative analysis is done to depict the health status of the gearbox components. However, an effective signal processing methodology is always required to detect incipient faults at a very early stage as the actual fault signature is generally masked under environmental noise and considered to be difficult to extract. Hence, this paper proposes an intelligent gear fault diagnosis methodology based on Maximal Overlap Discrete Wavelet Transform and Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) to identify the incipient fault signatures at a very early stage. To check the performance of the proposed methodology, different classifiers performance such as Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, Ensemble Tree, Naive Bayes, and k-Nearest Neighbor are also depicted and compared. Results shows that the VMD-based signal processing technique extracts the hidden faulty signature and helps to accurately classify the fault stages.

2015
In the recent years, the research community has shown interest in the development of brain–computer interface applications which assist physically challenged people to communicate with their brain electroencephalogram (EEG) signal. Representation of these EEG signals for mental task classification in terms of relevant features is important to achieve higher performance in terms of accuracy and computation time. For feature extraction from the EEG, empirical mode decomposition and wavelet transform are more appropriate as they are suitable for the analysis of non-linear and non-stationary time series signals. However, the size of the feature vector obtained from them is huge and may hinder the performance of mental task classification. To obtain a minimal set of relevant and non-redundant features for classification, six popular multivariate filter methods have been investigated which are based on different criteria: distance measure, causal effect and mutual information. Experimental results demonstrate that the classification accuracy improves while the computation time reduces considerably with the use of each of the six multivariate feature selection methods. Among all the combinations of feature extraction and selection methods that are investigated, the combination of wavelet transform and linear regression performs the best. Ranking analysis and statistical tests are also performed to validate the empirical results.

A New Feature Extraction Method Based on Improved Variational Mode Decomposition, Normalized Maximal Information Coefficient and Permutation Entropy for Ship-Radiated Noise
2020
Due to the existence of marine environmental noise, coupled with the instability of underwater acoustic channel, ship-radiated noise (SRN) signals detected by sensors tend to suffer noise pollution as well as distortion caused by the transmission medium, making the denoising of the raw detected signals the new focus in the field of underwater acoustic target recognition. In view of this, this paper presents a novel hybrid feature extraction scheme integrating improved variational mode decomposition (IVMD), normalized maximal information coefficient (norMIC) and permutation entropy (PE) for SRN signals. Firstly, the IVMD method is employed to decompose the SRN signals into a number of finite intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The noise IMFs are then filtered out by a denoising method before PE extraction. Next, the MIC between each retained IMF and the raw SRN signal and PE of retained IMFs are calculated, respectively. After this, the norMICs are used to weigh the PE values of the retained IMFs and the sum of the weighted PE results is regarded as the classification parameter. Finally, the feature vectors are fed into the particle swarm optimization-based support vector machine multi-class classifier (PSO-SVM) to identify different types of SRN samples. The experimental results have indicated that the classification accuracy of the proposed method is as high as 99.1667%, which is much higher than that of other currently existing methods. Hence, the method proposed in this paper is more suitable for feature extraction of SRN signals in practical application.

Intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) provide an intuitive representation of the oscillatory modes and are mainly calculated using Hilbert–Huang transform (HHT) methods. Those methods, however, suffer from the end effects, mode-mixing and Gibbs phenomena since they use an iterative procedure. This paper proposes an augmented Prony method for power system oscillation analysis using synchrophasor data obtained from a wide-area measurement system (WAMS). In the proposed method, in addition to the estimation of the modal information, IMFs are extracted using a new explicit mathematical formulation. Further, an indicator based on an energy and phase relationship of IMFs is proposed, which allows system operators to recognize the most effective generators/actuators on specific modes. The method is employed as an online oscillation-monitoring framework providing inputs for the so-called wide-area damping control (WADC) module. The efficacy of the proposed method is validated using three test cases, in which the IMFs calculation is simpler and more accurate if compared with other methods.

A Method for Extracting Features of the Intrinsic Mode Function’s Energy Arrangement Entropy in the Shaft Frequency Electric Field of Vessels
2025
To address the challenge of detecting low-frequency electric field signals from vessels in complex marine environments, a vessel shaft frequency electric field feature extraction method based on intrinsic mode function energy arrangement entropy values is proposed, building upon a scaled model. This study initially establishes a measurement system for shaft frequency electric fields, utilizing a titanium-based oxide electrode to construct an equivalent dipole source simulating the shaft frequency electric field signals of different types of vessels. Subsequently, a comparative analysis of the time-domain and frequency-domain characteristics of signals after modal decomposition is conducted. A feature extraction method is then proposed that combines the maximum average energy of intrinsic mode functions with arrangement entropy values to achieve discrimination of target signals. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method is validated through sea trials. The results indicate that the method can successfully screen different types of typical vessels and address the target screening failure caused by slight differences in the characteristic parameters of the shaft frequency electric field signal. The entropy difference has been improved from 0.05 to about 0.2, and the difference rate of the shaft frequency electric field signal has been improved by 75%. This has effectively reduced the false alarm rate of target detection.
