يبحث الكاتب الفرنسي باتريك موديانو، في روايته \" شارع الحوانيت المعتمة\"، عن هويته الشخصية، عير رحلة تشبه إلى حد بعيد تغريبه بني هلال، مع فارق واحد هو أن بطل هذه الرواية يحاول العثور على هويته بعد أن فقد ذاكرته وراح يبحث عن وجوده في ركام المدن والعواصم. وتنتهى الرواية عندما يصل البطل إلى روما ويعرف هويته الحقيقية لكن \"موديانو\" لا يبلغنا بهذا الاسم ولا بهويته كأن المؤلف قد أنهكته رحلة البحث مثلما فعل بطله.
