هو أحد عيون كتب النحو التي وصلتنا من السلف في القرن الثامن الهجري وتتلخص فكرة الكتاب في نظم ألف بيت من الشعر للعلامة أبي عبدالله محمد جمال الدين بن عبدالله بن مالك، في أرجوزة اشتهرت بألفية ابن مالك حوت النحو العربي وقدرا مما يلزمه من الصرف، حظيت بعشرات الشروحات أشهرها شرح ابن عقيل للعلامة قاضي القضاة بهاء الدين عبدالله بن عقيل المولود سنة 698 هـ، والمتوفى سنة 769 هـ، وهذا هو الشرح الذي استمدينا منه الشواهد، وهي ما اصطلح على تسميتها بشواهد ابن عقيل وتوجيهها والتعليق عليها هو عملنا في هذا الكتاب.
