يتم إنتاج هرمون النمو من قبل الفص الأمامي للغدة النخامية. ويحفز هرمون النمو نمو العظام والعضلات وعدد من الأعضاء الداخلية. وبذلك، تؤدي زيادة هرمون النمو إلى يؤدي إلى حدوث نمو عنيف و غير طبيعي لأنسجة الجسم. ينجم فرط إنتاج هرمون النمو غالبا عن وجود ورم غير خبيث (حميد) في الغدة النخامية. كما يمكن لبعض الأورام النادرة في البنكرياس والرئتين أن تنتج هرمونات تحفز الغدة النخامية على إنتاج كميات كبيرة من هرمون النمو، مع النتائج المرضية نفسها.
