يقدم هذا الكتاب عرضا للتاريخ الطبيعي للذكاء في الحيوان والنبات بل والجماد فالجماد في صوره بلورة السكر مثلا يبدي أيضا قدره على معالجه المعلومات فعندما توضع بلورة السكر في محلول فوق مشبع فإنها تمد المحلول بالمعلومات التي تؤدى إلى بدء تفاعل يؤدى إلى تنامي البلورة فيما يعرف عاميا بالسكر النبات وهكذا يبدأ الذكاء في أدنب درجاته بظواهر ما تشبه الذكاء البدائي في النبات فالحيوانات البدائيه ثم الحيوانات الراقيه لنصل في النهاية إلى أرقى درجات الذكاء في البشر كأفراد وكمجتمعات.
