يعالج الكتاب ثلاثة مواضيع رئيسية كانت منذ القدم محط الفكر الإنسانية وهي التفكير في الذات والتفكير في العلاقة بالغير ورؤية العالم في الإدراك الفردي والتصور الجماعي ويبدأ الكتاب بطرح سؤال مباشر ما الفلسفة؟ لكن الدكتور محمد الشيخ لا يجيب إجابة تقليدية على سؤال بهذا الحجم بل يسرد قصة الفيلسوف الفرنسي جيل لاشولييه التي حدثت له عام 1864 حينما افتتح محاضراته في المدرسة العليا للأساتذة بباريس بطرح نفس السؤال الذي يطرحه الدكتور الشيخ في مطلع كتابه هذا ويتحدث المؤلف في كتابه عن تجارب فلسفية معاصرة ويتوقف عند تجربة المقاهي الفلسفية مفصلا فيها بدءا من وقوفه عند كتاب \"قهوة سقراط\" الذي أصدره أحد أبرز من ساهموا في تفشي ظاهرة المقاهي الفلسفية وهو الفيلسوف الفرنسي ماك سوتيه.
