بشكل عام يضم بين دفتيه موضوعين الأول : يتناول الحديث عن القلب، باعتباره الساحة التي يحوم حولها الشيطان للوصول إلى مآديه أما الموضوع الثاني، فهو الموضوع الذي يندرج تحت عنوان الكتاب، وقد أخرجه المصنف في باب واحد، وهو الباب الثالث عشر من أبواب الكتاب. وهذا الباب تحته فصول كثيرة وهذا الباب تحته فصول كثيرة، لا تحمل عناوين، وما ذكر منها فهو من وضع المحققين الذين اعتنوا بالكتاب، والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا هو جزء من أجزاء هذا الكتاب وفيه يجمع صالح أحمد الشامي جميع النصوص التي تحدث فيها ابن القيم فقط عن مكايد الشيطان ومصايده، وهو ليس اختصارا للكتاب الأصل \"إغاثة اللهفان من مصايد الشيطان\"، وإنما هو مادة الكتاب التي وضعها المؤلف بعيدا عما ليس له علاقة بالموضوع.
