هذا الكتاب يتضمن معلومات عن المدينتين المقدستين مكة المكرمة والمدينة المنورة، استقيت من خلال ما كتبه عدد من الرحالة الأجانب الذين قدموا إليهما، وسجلوا انطباعاتهم ومشاهداتهم عما رأوه فيهما. وبلغ عدد الرحالة الذين تضمنهم الكتاب (16 (ستة عشر رحالة بداية بلودوفيكو فارتيما (1503م)، مرورا ببادل ليبليخ (1807م)، وجون لودفيك بوركهارت (1814م)، وانتهاء بالحالة كور تيلمون (1894م). وسبق ترجمة الكتاب دراسة تمهيدية تناولت تاريخ الغربيين لمكة المكرمة والمدينة المنورة، وأسبابها، وأبرز رجالها.
