يختلف جلجامش بطل هذه الملحمة عن أبطال الملاحم الإغريقية فبينما كان أولئك شخوصا خياليين من إبداع هوميروس وكان لجلجامش وجود حقيقي في التاريخ وإذ تشير سجلات السلالات الحاكمة لممالك ما بين النهرين إلى أن جلجامش حكم أوروك حوالي عام 2700 قبل الميلاد وبعد وفاته ولحقب طويلة ذاع صيته كفارس مغوار ومحارب شرس وكمشيد للأعمال الهندسية الشامخة.
