تعتبر هذه القصة هي العمل الروائي الثاني للكاتب (تشارلز ديكنز)، تقع الأحداث بين مدن فرنسا، باريس، إنجلترا ولندن، تعبر عن أحداث الثورة الفرنسية ومحنة الطبقة العاملة في فرنسا ومواجهتها تعسف الطبقة الأرستقراطية واستبدادها. بطل هذه الرواية والذي تدور حوله الأحداث هو (تشارلز دارني)، شاب من الطبقة الأرستقراطية أخذته الثورة بين أقدامها، لم تراعى طيبته ولم تفرق بين الخير والشر خلال أحداثها. من الشخصيات البارزة بهذه الرواية شخصية (سيدنى كارتون) الذى يعمل بالمحاماه يشرب الخمر كثيرا ويضحى بحياته لأجل محبوبته (لوسى مانيت) زوجة دارنى هذا العمل الروائي لتشارلز ديكنز كان الأكثر انتشارا وتدريسا لطالاب الثانوية بالولايات المتحدة.
