يضع الكاتب بين يدي القارئ العربي كتابا أثر في مجرى تاريخ العالم الحديث، من حيث إنه أرسى معتقدات وطبع مسالك أجيال من البشر-كنائس وأفرادا-ليس في الغرب فقط، بل في كل أنحاء العالم أيضا حيث امتدت رسالة الإصلاح الإنجيلي. يعتبر أسس الدين المسيحي التعبير الكلاسيكي عن اللاهوت الإنجيلي المصلح، بل خلاصة المسيحية الإنجيلية المصلحة. وقد صرف مؤلفه جون كالڤن (1509-1564) معظم حياته-بعد تحوله إلى المعتقد الإنجيلي في الثلاثينيات من القرن السادس عشر-يحسن ويصقل ويوسع هذا العمل حتى وصل إلينا بشكله الحالي.
