نحن في إيطاليا الفاشية ما قبل الحرب، حيث ينجب زوجان شابان طفلا يشعر الأب بالغيرة نحوه، وفجأة ينتقل المشهد إلى العصور القديمة حيث يحمل الطفل إياه مربوطا إلى عصا مثل كبش كي يقتل في البر. لكنه ينقذ، ويطلق عليه اسم أوديب، ويعنى به ملك وملكة كورنثه كابن لهما. ويوما ما يخبر أوديب بنبوءة عجيبة: لقد قدر له أن يقتل أباه ويتزوج أمه. مرتعبا من ذلك، يهاجر من كورنثه ظنا منه أنه يهرب من والديه الحقيقيين. يمثل هذا السيناريو محاولة بازوليني لتصوير سينمائيا المسرحية التي كتبها سوفوكليس وجرى تمثيلها قبل الميلاد بأكثر من أربعمئة عام لأسطورة أوديب في الميثولوجيا الإغريقية. ومحاولته أيضا لتحدي التفسير الفرويدي الشائع لها \"عقدة أوديب\". ومحاولته الأمضى، أيضا، لإعادة الحياة إلى السينما الخالية من الألوان وفق تعبيره.
