التراجم أوجز المؤلف الإمام محيي الدين بن العربي منهجه في هذا الكتاب في مقدمته القصيرة حيث بين فيها أنه تتبع تذكرة شيخه المقريزي، واستخلص منها ما كتبه من تراجم الأئمة الحنفية، قال : فأحببت أن ألحق بكل اسم ما تيسر لي من تراجم ممن تسمى به منهم، على نحو ما قصد من الاقتصار على ذكر من له تصنيف. بالتالي فمادة الكتاب الأساسية هي ما ضمنه المقريزي لكتابه التذكرة، واقتصر المؤلف منها على الأعلام الحنفية الذين صنفوا.
