المسكن هو إطار معنوي ومادي يلبي احتياجات الإنسان المتغيرة وهي مطالب جسدية ونفسية وترجع في مجملها إلى الأسرة كتركيب اجتماعي له أشكاله المختلفة والمتغيرة حسب نوع الحضارة التي يعيش فيها وكيفية تطورها مع الزمن وما نعنيه بالمسكن بناء يضم فراغات داخلية مجهزة وصالحة لكافة الأنشطة التي يزاولها الإنسان لكي ينجح في حياته فعالا في تقدم وإزدهار المجتمع الذي يعيش فيه وهذا يتطلب أن يكون مسكنه مكانا يخلد العامة والخاصة ويكون عضوا فيه للراحة النفسية والجسدية ويدخل عليه البهجة والسرور من خلال تناسق عناصر التصميم الداخلي وإسهامها في تسهيل الاحتياجات الأساسية والإحساس بالأمن والخصوصية.
