«أنشودة الجلاد» فأشبه بتحقيق صحافي أرخ من خلال ميلر لحياة وموت المجرم الأميركي غيلمور الذي أعدم رميا بالرصاص عام 1977 بعد أن خير بين السجن مؤبدا والإعدام فاختار الإعدام لأن «وطأته أخف من السجن المؤبد» وفق قول ميلر والحقيقة أن ميلر إنما انطلق في كتابه هذا من ذلك الاختيار ليضع نصا طويلا مدهشا يصعب تصنيفه أدبيا أو فكريا حتى وإن كان ينتمي منطقيا إلى الخانة نفسها التي ينتمي إليها «بدم بارد» لترومان كابوتي.
