يعد هذا الكتاب أول وثيقة بلاغية من التراث الإغريقي تحمل مؤثرات عربية من حيث اهتمامها بجماليات الشعر العربي في تأكيده على \"بيت القصيد\" و\"البيت الفريد\". وقد تولدت فكرته، عندما التقى \"لونجين\" ذو الأصول العربية والثقافة الإغريقية الواسعة في بلاط زنوبية-ملكة تدمر-بحضارات وآداب مختلفة، وتفتق ذهنه عن موضوع الكتاب، الذي يعالج مفهوما بلاغيا ونقديا هو \"الجلال\" الذي يعبر عن سمو اللغة وتميزها، وغايته عند الشعراء ليس إقناع السامعين (وهو الهدف الأسمى عند بلاغيي الإغريق والرومان) بل أن يخلب لبنا ويخطفنا وينقلنا بعيدا عن أنفسنا تعجبا وإندهاشا وحبورا وكالبرق يكشف في لحظة واحدة قوة المتكلم أو الخطيب.
