يقدم هذا الكتاب قراءة جديدة لرسالة الغفران لأبي العلاء المعري تنطلق من فرضية محددة تنظر إلى رسالة الغفران بوصفها نصا سرديا بحيث تحل هذه الفرضية إشكالا صادفه الباحثون عندما أرادو تصنيف هذه الرسالة تصنيفا أدبيا فبعضهم عدها مشرحية وبعضهم صنفها قصة وآخرون اعتبروها تصنيفا يجمع بين القصة والرسالة أما المؤلف فنظر إلى هذه الرسالة كنص سردي ليحل الإشكال المطروح بين الأدباء فاعتبره جنسا أدبيا يستوعب الكل المسرحية والقصة والرسالة أما القسم الثاني من الرسالة فعده نصا سجاليا قدم ضمن إطار سردي شامل محكوما برسالة ابن القارح لأنه كان يرد على تلك الرسالة مسألة مسألة في محاورة أدبية أظهرت رجلين يختلفان عن بعضهما كل الاختلاف في النظر إلى الحياة الأخروية.
