تأتي رواية \"الأحمر والأسود\" حتى يعبر فيها \"ستاندال\" عن الصراع العسكرى والذى يرمز إليه باللون الأحمر والصراع الديني والذي يرمز إليه باللون الأسود وهو لون ثوب الرهبان وتدور أحداث الرواية حول الظروف الاجتماعية في فرنسا في القرن التاسع عشر واتهم وهو الليبرالي بأنه عميل فرنسي للبوليس النمساوي فعاد إلى باريس حيث نشر كتابه عن الحب الذي لم تتجاوز مبيعاته عشرين نسخة خلال عشرة أعوام كاملة عمل هذا العاشق لشكسبير والمحب لبريطانيا والذي كان يضيف منذ مراهقته في كتاباته الخاصة بعض التعابير الإنجليزية متعاونا مع المجلات اللندنية.
