يحاول هذا الكتاب دراسة الكتاب المقدس من وجهة نظر ناقد أدبي أردت في الأصل أن أجري مسحا استقرائيا عميقا بحق للصورة الفنية والسرد في الكتاب المقدس، مشفوعة بتفسير للكيفية التي أنشأت فيها هذه العناصر في الكتاب المقدس إطارا خياليا، أو عالما أسطوريا كما أسميه، بقي الأدب الغربي يشتغل ضمنه وصولا حتى القرن الثامن عشر، وما زال يشتغل ضمنه إلى حد كبير ولم يغب عن ناظري هذا الهدف، لكنه تراجع عبر عملية كنت قد جربتها من قبل، وكانت نتيجتها كتابة \"تشريح النقد\".
