يتناول الكتاب حكايات مستخلصة من رحلة ابن جبير التي انطلق فيها من الأندلس إلى الديار المقدسة في مكة والمدينة عابرا المتوسط، ثم سافر في النيل واجتاز صحراء عيذاب حيث عبر البحر الأحمر من مينائها إلى جدة، وبعد أداء فريضة الحج تابع سفره إلى بغداد فالموصل فحران، ليتوجه من هناك عبر سورية وفلسطين، عائدا من مينائها عكا، إلى غرناطة بحرا.
