يعرض الكتاب لقصة حياة هيلين كيلر المعجزة والأسطورة التي ولدت في 27 يونيو عام 1880 في مدينة تاسكومبيا بولاية ألاباما الأمريكية لأب كان محاربا في أثناء الحرب الأهلية آنذاك ثم أصبح فيما بعد مالكا لإحدى الصحف وبعد أشهر معدودة من مولدها مرضت مرضا شديدا حار فيه الأطباء وفقدت السمع والبصر ونتيجة لذلك أصبحت بكماء إلى أن التقت بمعلمتها آن سوليفان والتي قامت بتعليمها القراءة والكتابة عن طريق كتابة الحروف على راحة يدها.
