كثيرة هي العوامل التي صنعت من الفنان مخرجا سينمائيا وروائيا وشاعرا ومصورا في الوقت ذاته. غادر عتيق رحيمي أفغانستان هربا من الحرب في ثمانينات القرن العشرين والتجأ إلى فرنسا. نال الجنسية الفرنسية وأنهى دراسة الدكتوراه بالسمعيات البصرية في جامعة السوربون. كان عبور تلك الحدود قد أوصله إلى العيش في ثقافة غريبة مبنية على الصورة أكثر مما أساسها الكلمة، هو القادم من بلاد تهيمن فيها ثقافة الكلمة والقصيدة. لهذا نراه يقع تحت تأثير الأدب والفلسفة من الغرب، وتعاليم الصوفية والروحانيات من بلاد المشرق.
