تدور أحداث القصة في فصل الصيف بمدينة بوستون بماساشوستس بالقرن السابع عشر داخل قرية متشددة تضطر سيدة شابة، تدعى هستر براين أن تغادر البلدة هي وطفلتها الرضيعة وكانت ترتدي على صدرها قطعة قرمزية اللون من القماش وكانت القماشة على شكل الحرف A حيث يمثل الحرف خطيئة الزنا التي ارتكبتها هستر فهو رمز لإثمها ليراه كل الناس قام روجر شيلينجوورث زوج هستر الذي يكبرها بكثير بإرسال زوجته إلى أمريكا بينما ظل هو لترتيب بعض الأمور في أوروبا.
