تركز القصص المسرودة في هذا الكتاب على قتال الجنود خلال الحرب وعلى الأسباب التي أدت إلى تطوعهم في الجيش وغالبيتها بسبب الحوافز المالية والمعنوية والخدمات الاجتماعية التي يقدمها خاصة أن المتطوعين هم في معظمهم من أبناء الطبقة العاملة المحتاجون أو الطامحون بتغيير أوضاعهم أما بالنسبة لحوافز المشاركة بالحرب في العراق فقد أكدوا أنهم كانوا في البداية مفعمين بالمشاعر الوطنية ومقتنعين بالمقولات الإعلامية عن وجود أسلحة الدمار ومحاربة الإرهاب وتصدير الديمقراطية وبعض هؤلاء الجنود ليسوا مواطنين أميركيين بل مهاجرين من بلدان مختلفة وشاركوا في الحرب لأنها تسهل عليهم الحصول على الجنسية الأميركية.
