في بحث مطول يعتبر بمثابة مدخل لهذا الكتاب، بينت أهمية التأثيل وضرورته في عملية التأريخ لأي معجم لغوي، فهم أمران مترابطان ومتكاملان. موضوع هذا القاموس، كما يفصح عنوانه، هو الألفاظ الفرنسية ذات الأصل العربي أو المعرب، والمعرب الذي يعيننا أمره هنا هو ما كانت العربية قد اقتبسته من لغات أخرى، وعاش في أحضانها وبيئتها العربية لمرحلة معينة، قبل أن تأتي الفرنسية فتنقله إليها وتستعيره بواسطة العربية مباشرة أو بواسطة لغة أخرى غير لغته الأصلية فكثير من الألفاظ ذات الأصول الشرقية كالهندية والفارسية والتركية والصينية أو الإفريقية ومنها الحبشية والأمازيغية دخل إلى اللغات الأوروبية عن طريق العربية، أي بعد أن استقر في البيئة اللغوية العربية لمدة معينة وأصبح جزءا المعجم العربي العام أصيلة ودخيلة، فصيحة ودارجة، وقديما حسم فريق من علمائنا مسألة المعرب بالقول : ما دخل إلى العربية فهو منها.
