في هذا الكتاب تدعو حنة آرندت إلى عدم اللجوء للتأمل فقط، بل وكذلك بالعمل على تغيير الحياة العامة والأحداث، موضحة في نفس الوقت مخاوفها من ممتهني الفكر مثل الفلاسفة الذين يتحالفون في نهاية الأمر مع الديكتاتورين، على غرار أفلاطون وهيدي، وكانت تنوي جمعها في ثلاث مجلدات، كل واحد منها يتناول موضوعا مستقلا وقد ظهر من هذا العمل الضخم إثر وفاتها، جزءان : الأول منهما بعنوان الفكر 1978، وهو محل هذه الترجمة، والثاني مستقل بذاته تحت عنوان الإرادة 1981، وقد ترجمتها إلى الفرنسية لوسيان لوترنجار (1981-1983)، أما الثالث والذي كان يفترض أن يحمل عنوان إبداء الرأي فلم يتسن جمعه.
