تتناول رواية (الاستيلاء على الأرض) والتي قام بتأليفه (كريستوف هاين) في حوالي (427) صفحة من القطع المتوسط موضوع (القصص الألمانية) مستعرضا التالي : في عام 1950 يصل برنارد هابر مع أهله، وهو في العاشرة من عمره، من برسالة إلى مدينة ساكسونية صغيرة. يفضل فيها المرء رؤية اللاجئين والمهجرين ومن هدم القصف بيوتهم يواصلون رحيلهم اليوم قبل الغد، سرعان ما يدرك الفتى أن الطريق الوحيدة أمامه هي تلقي الضربات المرة تلو الأخرى، والتغلب على الصعوبات. لا يستغرب أحد من أن برنارد، وبعد إنهائه الصف الثامن، يشرع في تدريبه المهني، ليصبح نجارا مثل أبيه، وذلك قبل أن يكسب، فيما بعد، أموالا طائلة بين وقت وآخر، كصاحب أرجوحة دوارة في المواسم الشعبية.
