تتوالى الأحداث في الرواية حتى يتعرض واحد من أبناء الشيخ وأسمه \"غيث\" للغرق ويقوم مرجان بإنقاذه، فيقرر الأخير تزويجه من أخته مكافأة له، رفضت في البداية ثم ما لبثت أن أحبته، ولكن الشيء الذي لم تعرفه \"مريم\" شقيقة \"غيث\" أن مرجانا مسكون بجني لا يؤمن سوى بالدم، غوايته رؤية الدماء في كل مكان، ولا يهمه أي شيء على الإطلاق، لا رحمة لديه على رجل ولا على امرأة، ما يعني أنه سوف يؤذي مريم وفي نهاية الرواية يقوم مرجان بتخيير مريم بين البقاء معه أو العودة إلى بيت أهلها... فماذا ستختار ؟
