يقدم هذا الكتاب بحثا شاملا فى الحضارة إذ أن كل معارف البشر وإنتاجهم يمكن أن تدخل -بمعنى معين- فى نطاق الحضارة، وإنما يهدف الكتاب غلى معالجة هذا الموضوع بإيجاز شديد، فهو يقدم فى القسم الأول منه محاولة نظرية لتعريف الحضارة وتحديد مجالها، ثم يعرض بعض التطورات التاريخية التى طرأت على الحضارة الحديثة وأخيرا يعالج بعض المشكلات التى أثارتها هذه التطورات ولقد اقتصرنا فى حديثنا عن التطورات التاريخية وعن المشكلات على الفترة الحديثة من التاريخ الحضارى لأنها هى الألصق بنا، وهى الأجدر بافيثار طالما أن من الواجب علينا أن نختار.
