«ستة رجال مشهورين يروون لكم هنا كيف بدلوا رأيهم حول الشيوعية» بهذه العبارة قدم الناشرون عام 1960 للكتاب الجماعي الذي صدر في ذلك العام تحت عنوان «الصنم الذي هوى»، والحقيقة أنه بهذه العبارة، أو من دونها، كان مقدرا لذلك الكتاب أن يحدث دويا هائلا، وأن يثير من السجالات ما لم يثره في ذلك الحين أي كتاب آخر، ذلك أن موضوع «الشيوعية والانتماء إليها والعودة عنها» كان موضوع من الموضوعات الشائكة في ذلك الوقت.
