يقول المؤلف هذا الكتاب مجموعة من المقالات واللقاءات حول الفن فن الغناء وفن الموسيقى وفن المسرح وفن السينما وقد كتبت هذه المقالات كلها خلال فترة عشت فيها قريبا من الحياة الفنية عندما كنت رئيسا لتحرير مجلة الكواكب من سنة 1965 إلى 1969 وقد ساعدتنى هذه الفترة على الاقتراب من الحياة الفنية الشعبية وساعدتنى على أن أتعرف على ذوق الجماهير ولقد مر حين من الزمن كان فيه الاهتمام بذو الجماهير عيبا لا يغفره أحد من المثقفين فالجماهير في واد والمثقفون في واد آخر ومن هنا فقد حاولت في هذا الكتاب أن أجمع بعض ما كتبته عن الفنانين ذوي التأثير الشعبي مثل أم كلثوم وعبد الوهاب وعن الفنون ذات التأثير الجماهيري الواسع مثل الغناء والموسيقى والسينما والمسرح.
