يتناول هذا الكتاب أخبار مكة والمدينة وتاريخهما، فمن مكة إلى المدينة على سائر بقاع الأرض انطلق الإسلام ورسالته.. ولكن هاتين البقعتين الطاهرتين لا يبدأ تاريخهما منذ نزول الوحي على الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، وإنما يمتد لأبعد من هذا بكثير، وعن هذا التاريخ وضع العالم البغدادى \"محمد بن عبد الله الواسطى بن العاقولي\" هذا الكتاب عن مكة المطهرة ومدينة الحبيب المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم، ويبدأ من ذكر ما كانت الكعبة عليه فوق الماء قبل خلق الله للسماوات والأرض.. ويشمل أيضا أحوال البيت وفضلة وما ذكره الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم فيها.
