يعد كتاب القاھرة مدينة الفن والتجارة من أھم الدراسات عن تطور العواصم الإسلامیة لمصر، وبصفة خاصة مدينة القاھرة والمؤلف يبدأ بالدراسة منذ الفتح العربى الذى أدى إلى اختلاط واسع الانتشار بین الشعوب فى قارتین، وانتهى باكتشاف الطريق حول رأس الرجاء الصالح، فهو حدث لم يسبق له مثیل فى تاريخ التجارة العالمیة، أدى بطريقة حاسمة إلى إضعاف دور مصر الدولى الحیوى. ويقدم المؤلف فى هذا الكتاب عرضا دقیقا للعادات والتقالید عن الشعوب والعواصم الإسلامیة الأولى، حیث كانت القاھرة بمثابة عاصمة عالمیة، مع بقائها مركزا إسلامیا، كما أصبحت محط أنظار الأوروبیین بسبب الرخاء التجارى الذى نعمت به.
