تعتبر رحلة الرحالة الألماني غيرهارد غولفس يهتم بتفاصيل دقيقة عن الحياة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والسياسية لمغرب منتصف القرن التاسع عشر وهي مرحلة لا نجد عنها في الخزانة التاريخية المغربية إلا كتابات شحيحة وما يميز غولفس عن كثير من زملائه، الذين سبقوه إلى المناطق المغربية، هو عدم حصر معلوماته على الاستدلال بشهادات الرحالة الذين سبقوه إلى زيارة المغرب وإنما تجاوزها إلى تمحيص هذه المعلومات واختبارها ميدانيا والمقارنة بينها وبين الأوضاع الراهنة التي عايشها شخصيا اجتماعية كانت أو اقتصادية أو سياسية أو عمرانية.
