تحكي قصة (زرياب) والتي قام بتأليفها (مقبول العلوي) والتي تقع في حوالي (224) صفحة من القطع المتوسط، عن حياة المطرب والموسيقي والعالم (أبو الحسن علي ابن نافع) الشهير بزرياب، ناقل الحضارة من الشرق للأندلس ومبتكر فن الإتيكيت في الغرب و(زرياب) تعني (الطائر الأسود ذو الصوت الجميل) هو الاسم الذي أطلقه إسحاق الموصلي على تلميذه بعد اكتشافه الموهبة الاستثنائية التي يتمتع بها في الغناء والعزف ؛ فيهتم بتربيته وتعليمه أصول الغناء والعزف على العود حتى يغدو عازفا بارعا ويقدمه للخليفة هارون الرشيد. لكن الأمور لا تدوم على حال، فالمعلم يغتاظ من إعجاب الخليفة بتلميذه ما يدفعه أن يطالبه بالرحيل عن بغداد. حينئذ تبدأ رحلة المتاعب مع زرياب الذي سينتهي به المطاف في الأندلس، حيث يكرمه فيها أميرها عبد الرحمن بن الحكم. يتابع زرياب مسيرة الإبداع والفن والعلوم التي لا يبخل فيها على أرض احتضنت موهبته حتى وفاته لتحتضن رفاته في ترابها.
